Hello,
I'm a father to be, so please bear with me.

My partner and I have been told that there's a very high chance (95%) that our baby will have Edwards syndrome. We've just had our 20 week scan with a heart scan booked for the morning.

We're both not happy with the way the scan was done today so I was just wondering if anyone knew if we are able to ask for a scan again as it all felt very very rushed and the scanner dude seems d to forget to check what the sex of the baby is for us!

Thank you in advance
Bones

80% of Edwards Syndrome babies are female.
How was this diagnosed?

We were told at first scan, then offered NPT. Opting not to have the amniotic one as it carries a massive risk of miscarriage.

Are they really? That's great.

@XBones do you understand what a diagnosis of Edward's Syndrome means?

Yea.

I'm just after some info if we can ask for a second scan

You can ask, they don’t have to say yes. You can always pay for a private one if they say no?

I would ask, your midwife can also support.

Lewiscapaldiscat · 15/02/2023 18:07

As long as they carried out the medical checks they don’t need to, or some won’t, tell you the sex.

in your situation your partner should speak to her midwife to discuss her concerns, particularly if you felt the scan wasn’t completed professionally.

if you have another scan tomorrow you could perhaps ask any questions then.

wishing you well in your journey and for a positive outcome.

I’m suprised it was rushed given that they think the baby had problems. Did you have nipt done? That would tell you the sex if you opted to know

I had this 20 years ago. We had a 3d scan to measure arms, fingers, legs length and to look for "soft" markers. This was a long time ago so it might have changed.

We had a normal scan which found abnormalities then a specialist one with a consultant to see.

TheVanguardSix · 15/02/2023 19:01

I’ve had two amnios and no miscarriage. The risk is very small, not massive at all, but I can completely understand your reluctance.
In my own case (been through this twice), I had a second, follow up scan by the consultant to confirm the markers seen at the 20 week, followed by an amniocentesis, which diagnosed the trisomy.
