Sterilisation at the same time as a section

Has anyone got any experience of this? I’m not due until July, so time to think about it, but was interested in asking people who had this done - or if you didn’t, why? Thanks Smile

I tend to think you shouldn't make a permanent decision like sterilisation when a lot is changing (new baby).

That said I believe it is very hard to get sterilisation on nhs at the moment except during a c section so if you definitely want it done that is a consideration

I found doctors were almost pushing me to sign up for sterilisation even on the morning of the c section which I think is quite shocking as this is not the correct way to consent at all. So make your decision in advance and don't get swayed on h to be day.

Thanks. I don’t think I’d look at getting sterilised if I wasn’t already having a section. I’ll be 43 when I have this baby, and I already have a two year old. I’m as confident as I can be I’m done. Whether I’ll ever actually have sex again is another matter!

But I suppose I’m wondering if there are any additional risks, if it might impede my recovery, anything like that?

It's best practice not to surgically remove fertility close to major life events (including childbirth) but that's often over-ridden.

There's a slightly higher failure rate when procedure is carried out with a C section. It's usually done these days by placing clips. These can wander out of place (meaning tubes can become patent again and pregnancy possible) and they seem to do so at a slightly higher rate when op is done when everything is distended or a bit out of place from pregnancy

I wish I had done it. I’m 42 now and had my last baby at 32 and I knew I was done then. (Two dc, I’ve got health issues). It would have saved me a lot of faffing about with contraception etc etc.

Paturday · 05/02/2023 08:19

I didn’t because I had been through enough and didn’t want any more complications/unnatural stuff going on 😄 call me cuckoo but that was my thinking. Also what if I didn’t get that ‘done’ feeling and then couldn’t have another. DH having the snip in July!

Paturday · 05/02/2023 08:20

Oh god they use clips too 🤢 I just can’t handle the idea of foreign bodies floating around in there

Boneweary · 05/02/2023 08:41

Yes … have to admit I don’t love that idea!

I probably don’t have all that much longer to think about contraception anyway!

I had it done......I was 38 and it was my 5th baby so absolutely knew I was done.
I barely remember that part of the whole procedure as I was too busy meeting my newborn.
And it must have worked as no more babies since!

I had an emcs and was strongly advised to be sterilised at the same time. I was 43. Felt quite bullied tbh. Post op after deciding not to go ahead I received an apology via my consultant saying it had not been appropriate to have it suggested and the member of staff had been spoken to . Possibly because it was an emcs which I was still digesting! Maybe different with an elective.

Oblomov22 · 05/02/2023 09:02

I thought they didn't do it anymore/rarely, at emcs time much these days because your tubes were swollen/inflamed etc? I was supposed to have mine done then, donkeys years ago, it had always been planned because of my diabetes, but it just never happened, so had mine done a few months later, keyhole, good recovery, minor op, a tad unpleasant feeling: just felt like someone had been rummaging around with my inners. Really glad I had it done.

minidancer · 05/02/2023 09:05

I had it done with my third section at 36. Glad I did it. Didn't notice anything at the time and it was my easiest recovery so it didn't affect that.

GenAndWine · 05/02/2023 12:06

I had it done with my second. I was a few months off 40 and just knew I was done.

I did heal slower from that c section but I also had a bouncy 2 year old to manage so who knows?

bloodyplanes · 05/02/2023 18:55

I had it done during my 4th emergency c-section. The failure rate is only very slightly higher if it's done then and it saved having to undergo another anaesthetic and procedure a few months later. Ive never had any problems and no failure 17 years later ( they both burned and cut my tubes to make sure)

NotMyDayJob · 05/02/2023 19:06

I had it done last year with my baby, now 10 months. 42 at birth, second child, definitely my last. To be honest, I've had lots of miscarriages, had fertility treatment for this baby. I don't want any more miscarriages, I don't want to worry about being pregnant, I've spent so much of my life on two week chunks. Was worried periods would be heavy/painful. They have been surprisingly pain free!

bumblebeemumma · 05/02/2023 19:25

I had it done last year. I was 40, fourth baby and it was my second section (both elective) so I actually requested it when it became apparent that I would be having a section again. I'm not sure it would have been offered to me if I'd not asked for it. Absolutely no difference in recovery for me and I'm so glad I did it as hormonal contraception doesn't agree with me and DP had already been on a lengthy waiting list for a vasectomy after we conceived baby number 4 so it was a no brainer. I was warned that there is a slightly higher chance of failure when tubal ligation is done during a c-section as your tubes are obviously all swollen so there's a higher risk of clips failing and tubes rejoining but even then it was less than 1% failure rate.
