I find hard to make up my mind between consultants and hospitals. Can someone put some light on my confusion? Is great portland a posh back-up plan when u cannot find space to privite wings in the nhs? do they have as much experience and technology as at st mary? what's the upside in going to great portland vs going to st mary? many thanks

portland like a large hotel, much smarter rooms etc than the lindo wing (st marys private wing). those who have given birth there swear by it, but i wouldn't go anywhere that wasn't attached to large teaching hospital (as the lindo is) in case of emergency.
had dd at st marys nhs, then had ds at the lindo privately. totally joyful going private, my consultant fab, would happily recommend him if you are looking for recommendations. Would suggest you do a tour of each, and see what your gut feeling is.
facilities at both should be excellent, it's more a question of how they are each dressed up.

good luck, and let us know how you get on!

personally i would not go near an nhs hospital unless it was my only lifesaving option. rates of infection for all sorts of bugs are high. these sorts of things are virtually unknown in the private system.

personally i feel much safer in the private system. something goes wrong and you call for assistance and the place is swarming with people in minutes. in the nhs you would wait hours as it is very understaffed. i prefer that the staff are not overworked and have time to deal with patients as the did when i was at the portland.

moocowme - are you joking in your post? Just in case you're not can I point out two things - 1) post-operative infection can occur in private hospitals too - the bugs aren't stopped at the door by the thick carpet you know! 2) It is absolute bollocks to say 'you will wait hours' if 'something goes wrong' beceause of understaffing. An emeregency is an emergency and NHS staff will move heaven and earth to save you and your baby.

Hi Girls,

Try www.babyfy.com, lots of handy information and reviews about birth units.

Personally, I had my two angels in St. Johns and Lizzie, and found it to be an amazing hospital.
