Vaginal Seeding for planned caesarean

Hi,

I wondered if anyone has done vaginal seeding, what their experiences were and what their hospital's view on it was?

Also keen to hear thoughts of people who chose not to, and what influenced that decision, whether personal preference or medical advice?

I'm pretty sure the hospital won't carry it out for me (although I intend to ask at my pre-op appointment), but I'm trying to decide whether it is worth doing myself or not.

I found a post from Imperial College, stating why they advise against it, but it doesn't seem very well justified.

See attached image for my interpretive summary :)

This is really interesting Op, I had a c section with my DD and she had horrendous colic, my DS however had a Vbac and was a settled baby. Anecdotally only, all babies I know that have been born by C-section have been colicky with gut problems leading to excessive screaming, there must be something in it!

My VB baby had horrendous colic and was a very unhappy baby. My CS baby was settled form the get go. I don't think there's anything in it. Some babies are happy and don't get colic, some do, whichever way they're born

DS2 was born by CS and we did seeding. There were no problems and he's a healthy lad with absolutely no gut problems.

I did seeding for my Elective C baby.
the doctors did not allow in operation room. So we did it after we were moved to our room.

Read some papers on the studies done and make your own conclusion. Some of the papers describe the method in detail so it can be easily replicated.

Not sure if the seeding did anything but we personally felt that we did all we could to pass on my biome to my baby.

My ds1 was a VB, was horrendously colicky, always ill etc. DS2 was a CS birth, the most contented baby and never ill.

What bs. My son was VB hardly ever ill and wasn't collicy

Emmamoo89 · 16/01/2023 15:17

I definitely won't be doing seeding for any of my children. Sounds grotesque

Just to add my CS was 5 years ago and my consultant was very supportive.

It's your baby, your vagina. You don't need permission or help to DIY.

Also you might want to rotate widdershins under the full moon; and dangle a hares foot over your belly. These esoteric benefits are all included in the fees if you hire me as your doula .

I would hazard a guess that because C-section babies/mother's also have a lower rate of breastfeeding then they could be more likely to have gut health/allergy issues because of that too. Probably isn't all down to the vaginal microbiome - although it is undeniably beneficial!
