Clexane & Elective C-Section

Anyone been on clexane during pregnancy & had an elective c-section?

Given you're not able to have a spinal within 12 hours of having taken a dose of clexane - I was advised at antenatal clinic that I'd be scheduled in for my elective c-section as early as possible in the day to allow me to resume the clexane medication more quickly.

I'm booked in for next week but the theatre admin can't yet tell me whether I have a AM or PM and said they won't confirm til a day or two before.

Ive told them what i was advised as clinic and theyve said yes, they are aware & they were almost certain Id have AM slot but just cant confirm. Should I be concerned about any miscommunication here or just relax & let them handle it? Seems odd they can't confirm.

You should stop taking your clexane 24 hrs prior to surgery. You will recommence having Clexane 6 hours post op given there are no complications. This is ehat we do in our unit. HTH.

Depends on the dose - 12 hours is correct for a prophylactic dose, 24 for a treatment dose.

Thanks. Yes I've been advised to take my last dose on Saturday night for c-section on Monday. Mt question was really around whether it's standard practice to schedule those on clexane in for early / morning surgery so that theres less of a wait to resume clexane again post surgery?

This is what I was advised at clinic but now being told that they can't confirm if I'll have an AM or PM surgery slot - feels like they should be able to confirm an AM slot for me so not sure if I should be worried that they can't at this stage.

Depends a bit on why you're on it/how crucial it is and on how the elective sections are managed at the hospital you're at (it may be that they have a whole bunch of high-risk patients that day so can't confirm the order, or that they manage their electives depending on the labour ward work load so it depends what else is going on that day). If they're particularly worried about your risk of clotting they'll most likely use foot/calf pumps as an interim measure until you're able to get back on the clexane. HTH

Yes as @Greybeardy said you will have Ted stockings applied on admission. These stocking are to help prevent blood clots, thrombus embolism deterrent stocking. During your op they will use electronic flowtron boots which automatically compress and decompress on your calves to prevent clots.
Don't worry too much about your place on the list and not having clexane, you can still mobilise whilst waiting for surgery.
Hope all goes well for you and Congratulations in advance 😊

Thanks both. Consultant made it sound like there was a clear clinical need to ensure I was seen to early morning so its thrown me a bit and seemed like mixed messaging. Thanks for your reassurance.
