Is heavy bleeding from C-section incision normal?

wardrobedoor1 · 10/12/2022 15:33

I had my baby a year ago by c-section and I am fully healed now. I just wanted to ask whether other mums who have had c-sections have experienced this.
After I had the c-section I bled heavily afterwards from the left side of my incision/scar area. The blood was constantly pouring out of it and soaked through multiple dressings that the midwives kept putting on.
I was so sleep deprived at the time and focused on my new baby. No one seemed too concerned so I just assumed it was normal. But now having spoken to other mums who have had c sections they said that they did not bleed through the scar area.
The care I received from the hospital was so poor for various reasons 😞. The doctor at the time mumbled something about it not being properly fixed on one side but that the bleeding would probably stop on its own. It did 3 days later and I felt so unwell I wonder whether this had anything to do with it.
Has anyone else experienced this? We want to try for another baby but I am so put off by my experience at the hospital 😞.

Not normal. Sorry you went through that. Is their another hospital you could go to instead?

MistyRock · 10/12/2022 15:36

Mine didn't bleed at all, but I had a top consultation do my c section as it was a risky birth. Hopefully this will bump the thread for you though.

Not normal IME

wardrobedoor1 · 10/12/2022 15:46

Thank you for the replies. That kind of confirms what I was thinking that it wasn't normal. I just think that this really should have been explained to me at the time rather than brushed off. I kept having to get them to change the thick dressings as it was soaking through to my clothes.
I wanted to try to have a VBAC next time but now I'm worrying about uterine rupture, especially if there is a weak point that was not stitched up properly. There is another hospital I can go to but it is quite a bit further away and has an even worse reputation.

Not normal. Maybe you should ask for it to be checked now even if time has elapsed.

TourmalineGiraffe · 10/12/2022 16:00

Nope, not normal in my experience

Balaya · 10/12/2022 16:02

Not at all, it's sewn shut and at worst you might see a bit of pink fluid for a day or two.

Please get help, it could get infected.

RememberedForAllTheWrongReasons · 10/12/2022 16:07

@Balaya op had her baby a year ago.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 10/12/2022 16:13

Mine didn't bleed at all.

I did find that when I had my caesarean (also a year ago) that there's very little guidance on what's "normal". I forced myself to get up and shower because I was encouraged to move and that's what I thought I should have been doing but then I was told off for doing too much!

It was hell.

I bled a lot with my second section but they put a drain in - I had a bottle attached for a couple days. After they removed it I didn't bleed anymore.
I think you need to see the consultant and explain what happened and ask their advice.

Somuchgoo · 10/12/2022 16:22

Mine didn't bleed at all either time.
What you experienced doesn't sound normal to me.

Oh yes. I had a drain too.

Blondlashes · 10/12/2022 16:28

Are you anemic? That can cause bleeding issues and problems with clotting

HowCanIPayItForward · 10/12/2022 16:42

3 CS and never had bleeding from the scar. I'd definitely get that checked.

Swissnotswiss · 10/12/2022 16:48

No! Definitely not the norm.

christmaslover88 · 10/12/2022 16:52

Definitely not normal op. I've had 3 c sections, the only one I had any bleeding from the scar was the one where I got a vomiting bug 24 hours afterwards and the vomiting caused some blood to seep out of the incision, but only a small amount. I rang the hospital in a panic who said as long as it stopped when the vomiting did and it wasn't gushing out then not to worry. I know it's hard with the current nhs but I'd maybe try to speak to your gp to discuss your concerns and the risks before ttc

AnuSTart · 10/12/2022 17:21

I've had 5 and not bled a drop. Very odd.

wardrobedoor1 · 10/12/2022 18:32

Thank you everyone. I think I need to get in touch with the hospital and speak to someone about what exactly happened. I know it sounds stupid but I am scared to do this. They were so horrible to me, I still have nightmares about the whole birth experience.

No, not normal at all. I had no bleeding from mine.

Have you had a birth debrief? You might find that helpful. Arrange it via PALS or your hospital's birth reflections service. I did this and found it useful.

piedbeauty · 10/12/2022 18:52

Just seen your last message. It's common to feel how you do when a birth goes wrong. I'm so sorry to hear it's affecting you so much a year later.

In a birth debrief you won't usually see the people who gave you care during your birth, so don't worry about that.

Good luck - I hope you find the closure you want. And that the surgeon learns from this so another woman doesn't have to go through the same. 💐

caringcarer · 10/12/2022 19:08

Not normal. Mine was very clean. My sister had a problem though. Hers got infected and she had pus. Pus went green. She was put on pencilling for 10 days and it cleared up but still a bit weepy afterwards.
