33wks +1 waters broken no contractions- hand hold

Hi all,

my waters broke very suddenly this morning as I was getting ready for my baby shower. I have been poorly with a cold and extreme coughing fits, for the last 10 days.

I am currently in hospital for the next 48 hours, being monitored, oral anti biotics for now and steroid injections in the thighs every 12 hours to mature baby boys lungs.

Has anyone gone on to be monitored safely in hospital until 37 weeks? Or is it likely he is going to be here in the next few days? I know no one really knows.. but any positive stories would be really helpful right now.

I am so terrified and we have had a long journey to become pregnant, he is IVF conceived. Thanks x

I met with up with a friend who went through this in the summer. Baby got to 36 weeks with mum on bed rest in hospital and they are both absolutely fine!

I wish you the absolute best of luck. It must be so scary. I was terrified and mine was only six weeks early. Hope you're feeling well supported. Keep asking "and what if we do X/Y or are there other options?" etc so you are totally informed.

Ah thank you, that’s very reassuring to know! It’s been a total shock, but trying to roll with it and know I am in safe hands at the hospital. Def creating a list of questions when I see the consultant later today..! X

Mine broke at 33+6 at 7am no Contractions until 3am at 34+1 and she arrived 4 hours later perfectly healthy. We didn't have any steroids due to having very severe diabetes and didn't want my sugars going too high. She came out screaming though and still has an amazing pair of lungs in her. Its scary in the meantime though.

My obstetrician said if waters break and continue to run you'll likely to start labour within 48 hours and if they go and stop then likely to be able to hold out.

However I have a friend whose waters broke at 33 weeks and she went on to be induced at 37 weeks. Sadly you'll just have to wait and see

However at 33 weeks the long term prognosis for the baby is the same as a full term baby though they may need a bit of help in the short term.

Good luck.

@Sydney1986x How's it going?

Sydney1986x · 05/01/2023 11:13

@Bumblebee412 thanks for your message. Unfortunately, I contracted a womb infection and infection in my lungs, then sepsis..! Meaning baby needed to be delivered asap. I was put on the hormone drip for 4 hours before they decided it was not going to work and I was put under GA and ECS. I was unable to have epidural, spinal block or any pain relief due to risk of further infection with sepsis. Baby boy spent 17 days in NICU and was home for Christmas. He is thriving, and I am slowly recovering.. pretty traumatised but will get there x

So sorry to hear this! Please take care of yourself and so glad to hear baby boy is doing OK and you're slowly recovering. Try to talk about it and not bottle it up, there's birth reflections and lots of support out there when you're ready too, best of luck xxx

that must have been very scary for you :( so glad to hear you are on the mend, be kind to yourself and let everyone else look after you..you’ve been through a pretty horrific experience, but huge congrats on your baby boy and glad to hear he’s thriving x

That's such a lot to go through. Reach out for perinatal mental health support if you need it. Congratulations on your baby!
