Post birth toiletries

I'm due my first baby in February and am trying to get everything sorted just now, what post birth toiletries does everyone recommend?I've got disposable breast pads already.
what are the best maternity towels? How many will I likely need? What else should I stock up on for me? (What baby needs is a lot more obvious/ other people talk about it more)

I used disposable incontinence knickers (Tena extra large) for the first two days.

Coconutcream123 · 27/11/2022 19:39

Maternity knickers with a pad in them. The tena lady pants / incontinence pants with a pad for the first few days. Best tip I ever had was that!

I really liked the lil-lets maternity pads. Used them for maybe a couple of weeks before I could use normal pads (I did have a section though so may have needed more if I had a vaginal birth)

Spritz for bits is quite often recommended
Big knickers - great for if you do end up with a section
Take a jug or something similar so you can pour warm water on yourself when you go for that first wee
Nipple cream if you plan to breastfeed

The basics - shampoo conditioner body wash and toothpaste etc
Hairbands (a must for labour if you have longish hair)
Recommend a fan too as wards can be hot

I know some of these aren't just toiletries but definitely things to consider.

Im also due a baby in feb too!

Lansinoh nipple cream.

stuntbubbles · 27/11/2022 19:45

• Lansinoh for nipples
• Big knickers
• Big disposable mesh knickers for the immediate aftermath
• Flip-flops for the hospital shower
• All maternity pads much of a muchness to me
• Bed/mattress pads for pre-labour waters breaking/post-birth goo – post partum sweat is another level, don’t soak your mattress!
• Sports water bottle with a straw so you don’t have to move/twist to drink
• Wet wipes for if you’re a bit immobile but want a clean-ish face/pits wash in bed
• Hairbands
• Lip balm! Maternity wards are hotter than Hades

Second the fan! Post natal was BOILING and the adrenaline didn’t help 😂

I used boots maternity towels which were great for me, I took a whole pack with me and used them all as my waters broke on the ward (induced) and it just kept coming 😂 spritz for bits is fab although I didn’t use it in hospital, I waited until we got home as I was too scared! Nipple cream for sure. Massive pants in case of a section (and they’re just bloody comfy!) baggy joggers to go home in.

your usual toiletries (shampoo etc). I took my own nice toilet roll too as I was in for 5 days as my induction took ages. Don’t forget flip flops for the shower!

I took my own pillow too as the hospital ones are rubbish and honestly it made all the difference!

I’m due DC2 in Jan and picked up a few bits from boots the other day;

nipple cream
maternity pads (I think any thick/long ones would do really as long as they are not scented?)
I bought travel size shampoo/conditioner/toothpaste and shower gel, might seem excessive for what will hopefully be one night in hospital but will get used!
Im packing paracetamol because could not get hold of a nurse/midwife on postnatal last time for love nor money

Tal12 · 27/11/2022 19:50

Little luxuries for yourself. First baby I packed the basics, breast and maternity pads etc. second baby I packed a mini Bobbi brown vitamin face cream, and a mini molten brown shower gel for that first birth birth shower. It really made me feel better and fresher, and the face cream just made me feel more human! I felt I deserved those little luxurious after the ordeal of labour and birth.

2020firsttimemum · 27/11/2022 19:58

@Tal12 this is a great idea and definitely going to do this for DC2
Treat yourself after getting a baby out!

Yes! On a medication note: glycerin suppositories, Lactulose, Movicol. I took a “belt and braces” approach to the premier postpartum poo. And a flannel – hold it against yourself when going if you get that “I’m going to shit myself inside out” sensation.

Luxuries made me laugh – first baby I packed a wafty kimono dressing gown and fabulous Chanel fuchsia lipstick. Had a sweaty, bloody and brutal EMCS and didn’t shower for three days Grin

For both my births I've taken tena lady of pants instead of maternity pads. I really don't like the maternity pads and for the first 2-3 days after birth the tena pants are great. I was in hospital for a few days and found that a couple of packets was enough. I then switch to my period pants for the next couple of weeks (I find these a lot gentler than that pads if you had stitches etc).

I have the usual such as shampoo, conditioner, shower gel. I also took face wash, face cream and lip salve. It may sound silly but being able to put on my face cream and fresh pjs felt so nice!!

I also took some of the self heating spacemasks which were just the best! Also used expert midwives 'spritz for bitz'.

LovelyBitOfSquirrelll · 27/11/2022 22:39

I also used the Tena pants! Much easier than pads for the first few days. I also used spritz for bits but sprayed onto the Tena pants rather than directly onto bits as I just couldn’t pluck up the courage 🤣

20viona · 27/11/2022 22:41

Spritz for bits is a life saver, big massive black pants and Morrisons maternity pads are the best. I bought some disposable Tena pants and absolutely hated them I took them straight off.

NoFitStateMum · 27/11/2022 23:19

Liquid witch hazel from any pharmacy. Heaven in a bottle for perineal stitches or tears. Pour onto a clean maternity pad every time you change. Refrigerate for extra relief.

NoFitStateMum · 27/11/2022 23:19

Asda Little Angels maternity pads were amazing and so comfy.
