Stitches

Just curious to other people's experiences really.

I had my second baby 3 weeks ago now - it was a quick delivery and I had a small second degree tear that required stitches.

The midwife doing the stitches gave me some local anaesthetic and began stitching. It was honestly so painful, much more painful than giving birth and I had to have a lot of gas and air to get through. I could feel her pulling the stitches through, but it wasn't just a sensation of pulling it was also very very painful. I had my baby on my chest at this point, I did try to say it hurt but didn't feel like I was getting anywhere so went for the gas and air to get me through.

For my first birth I had a third degree tear and was stitched up in theatre so didn't feel a thing.

No lasting damage done, I'm just curious as to whether that's the norm or not?

I had a second degree internal tear, I had gas and air for the local anaesthetic shot but after that couldn't feel any pain, could feel the tugging of the stitches but not pain

Yes, sounds like what I had. I'll never forget that internal tugging feeling, but I was making full use of the gas and air and this really helped with the pain.
Agree that this was more painful than the actual pushing stage.

I had a lot of stitches, internal and external, due to being induced and having my drip cranked up. My dd shot out like a bullet from a gun and left a wave of destruction behind her. Local anaesthetic didn't work, and I felt every single one. So painful.

I had stitches with both of mine - both time no pain, just the tugging feeling (1st and 2nd degree tears).

The midwife did say to me this time that you will still feel it in the shallower part of the skin (?) and that some parts are more difficult to anaesthetise than others. But she checked with me the area was fully numb before she went ahead and kept checking throughout as she said she would repeat injection if needed, I'd didn't need to use the gas and air.

I think local anaesthetic works differently for different people, and some midwives are better at giving it than others. Fortunately gas and air knocks me out and I wouldn't have stitches without it (from someone who didn't want/need any pain relief during labour).

I had a second degree tear with my first. Between the exhaustion, local anaesthetic, vast quantities of gas + air, hormones, and three years having passed, I don't remember any pain. Other than the initial local injection that is. I have a vague recollection of some unpleasant tugging, but that's all.

This is what happened to me. It was so painful and they spoke to me like I was making it up!
