Hospital bag HELP!

curlywurly10 · 09/11/2022 00:49

This may be a silly question but i am only just now thinking (more like stressing) about the hospital bag that i have yet to pack even though i am 37+5😳

How much clothes did you pack for yourself and baby? also how much clothes (layers) would you recommend bringing the baby home in as it will be cold out, although it's just a short trip from the hospital to the car i don't want the baby to end up cold!

I know to pack basics as in nappies, wipes, pads and toiletries but other than that i am lost! seen so many lists that look crazy long and it's not helping my stress.

Maybe i'm overthinking as i am a first time mum but i'd really really appreciate some suggestions so i can get the bag packed and out of the way as soon as possible.

This isn’t a complete list but will help you get started.
for yourself
lip balm
snacks
two night clohtes
disposable or big underwear
maternity pads
Day time clothes 2x
little hand held fan (I didn’t need this)
Flip flops- these are good when you shower
long phone charger

baby
Hat (on leaving)
2 blankets (my baby spat up on one)
formula (just in case milk doesn’t come in straight away)
two or three outfits

You can pack much more but I honestly think it’s not needed. I went in and gave birth at 34 weeks whilst having covid. We were both put in an isolation room (thankfully with the baby) and didn’t have any of my stuff (MiL later brought a few bits) and we were there for 3 days

Take a big T shirt or nightie for giving birth in, pjs with button fronts if you intend to BF for on the ward for afterwards, a dressing gown, a couple of bras or cropped tops, lots of big knickers or incontinence pants instead of using maternity pads, I would take enough pads or incontinence pants for 3-4 per day. As well as those I would take
Dressing gown
Slippers
Flip flops for in the shower
Breast pads
A dark coloured bath sheet
Toiletries
Cosy socks for while you are in labour, something to go home in (I wore what I went in to hospital to go home)
For baby
A pack of nappies
6 vests
6 baby grows
A cardigan or hoodie for baby to wear to go home
Hats
Scratch mitts
Baby toiletries, cotton wool pads, nappy cream, baby soap, baby wipes
Baby towel
Baby blanket
Put car seat in car boot

Snacks, long phone lead & charger, sports bottle for drinks in labour
Cordial or squash
Lucozade sport for during labour
Something to read
Cash for TV, newspaper etc
Simple painkillers
A bag for washing

Pack one bag for you & one for baby, pack your things with labour stuff on top, put baby things in ziplock bags so your other half doesn't have to rummage if need be.

You are better off taking too much rather than not enough

thank yous for the replies it has helped quite a bit, seems to be a lot you have to take 😬
did yous bring it in a mini suitcase or a big bag?? we won't have the chance to go home to get stuff if we run out so i would rather pack more than less but don't wanna show up with enough stuff for a week holiday 😅

I took a carry on wheeled case for my stuff & the changing bag for ds stuff, also don't forget bottles of pre made formula in case you can't BF & nappy sacks.

Mollymaggiemoo · 09/11/2022 02:02

I took a bag for me and the nappy bag for babe. I packed:
a couple pairs of pjs
toiletries
warm socks
underwear
pads
an outfit to wear home - leggings and a jumper

for baby:
3 vests
3 baby grows
nappies and wipes
small formula bottles
blankets
hat

when I had my son it was -35 and colder with the wind chill. I put him in a vest and baby grow with a cardi and hat on and then put blankets over him.
I packed light but had a bag in the car with spares for us both. I also really wanted to leave the hospital as soon as I could.

And a small pot of coconut oil to apply on baby’s bum as soon as they are born. It makes the meconium poo sooooo much easier to wipe off! X

I took a wheeled suitcase and that fit everything for me and baby. For coming home baby wore a vest, babygrow, cardi, hat and then a blanket tucked over him in the car seat.

I had a small suitcase with clothing for baby and me, plus enough extra for a night or two. And a rucksack with toiletries, snacks and nappirs. If you need to stay longer than that, DH/P can bring it in for you.

I only took a days worth of post-birth and baby stuff. When I had to stay in an extra day, my husband took my labour stuff home and brought new stuff in.
