Type of birth after haemorrhage with first

For any mums who experienced a significant haemorrhage during vaginal birth with your first and went on to have more babies- what were you advised for your next birth? Did you meet with an OB and did they recommend a C-section or anything else?

I am now pregnant with my second and in my second trimester (24 weeks). I was told at my booking appointment that my birth would be consultant led and high risk due to having had significant blood loss during my first birth. I actually (ignorantly) had zero idea how serious it was and thought I would be in the low risk category again. My midwives explained the consultant would just need to discuss with me some of the precautions they would take for me this time. However, I just heard a friend of a friend had a similar first birth to me and was advised to have a C-section by the OB’s. Of course my hospital has yet to schedule my OB appt and I keep following up with them as I’d like to plan if this is the route they will recommend. I’m wondering what everyone else was recommended. Obviously everybody’s births are different and different circumstances but just looking to get an idea.

Not me but like you it happened to a friend of a friend and they were also advised to have a C-Section.

At least with a planned one you can hopefully sort out childcare in advance and sort some things out to help you through the recovery period.

Mind you if you had severe blood loss with your first, you might find the recovery easier this time Wink

I was advised to have a vaginal birth, not a section. I gave birth under obstetrician care in the women and children's hospital. I had a cannula in and blood on standby.
I had 2 more children since and didn't haemorrhage with either.

It really depends on what the haemorrhage was from- if it was from your uterus not contracting down after delivering placenta or retained placenta then they may advise c section or certainly labour ward delivery rather than midwife led care.
If it was from a tear (depending on severity) then you may be fine to have a vaginal delivery with a cannula insitu and cross matched blood ready.

Hope all goes well for you and you can get some answers x

Opposite experience but I had a 2.5L PPH after an emergency section and my consultant would have preferred me to choose VBAC this time.

I was consultant led for second birth so could not give birth in a midwife led unit. I had significant blood loss after first birth and had transfusions. Second birth was so different, very quick and easy and no blood loss at all. I left hospital within 12 hours.

Depends on why your had it. Personally I had a mild haemorrhage with my first so had various appointments and whatnot with my second and actually lost less blood than average because they were able to manage the risk factors. Third one I lost the same as the first but weirdly felt much better after anyway.

I lost >1L of blood with DD1 but it didn't even come up during my pregnancy with DD2. I mentioned it at the booking appointment and was told it was fine. I also had a consultant appointment due to my low pre-pregnancy weight and I raised the PPH with her as well. She also said it was fine and as long as my growth scans were ok I could give birth wherever I wanted (including at home).

In the end my waters broke at 35 weeks and I was induced at 37 so needed to be in the labour ward rather than the adjacent midwife led unit. No abnormal bleeding at all.

I lost 6.5 pints of blood with my second. Had 2 transfusions and in ICU for 3 days afterwards. My consultant said if I had any more to have a CS but he advised me against having anymore (this was my 2nd) as it could be dangerous for me.

Speak to your consultant, and like others have said depends on the reasons for the PPH the first time around. Mine was due to retained placenta and a cervical tear (due to previous cervical cancer treatment).
