Quick birth

Hi ladies,

I had a super quick birth with my first baby. It was 52 minutes from established labour to her being born.

what is the likely hood this baby will be as quick or quicker?

My second was much faster, first I arrived at hospital 8cm and second was 10cm. It would have been even quicker if baby had not got stuck.

ISeeTheLight · 19/10/2022 18:47

I had a fairly quick birth - 4hrs or so - and was told if I ever had another baby to get to the hospital from the first contractions and to tell them about previous experience.
So I would assume 2nd one is likely to be as quick or quicker.

Very likely; this is called precipitous labour. There’s some very helpful Facebook groups for it. Both of my children were 2.5hrs or less from very first contraction niggle and well under an hour of active labour.

With my second we went to the hospital because I “didn’t feel right” despite Covid times and being told to wait as I’d had no contractions/show/waters broken etc. Contractions started 15min away from hospital and I’d had him 2hrs later!

beepbeep · 19/10/2022 18:56

First was 4 hours from first niggle, 2nd 2 hours twenty and third 40 mins

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 19/10/2022 19:03

I'd be going for a planned home birth unless other complications!

Libmama · 20/10/2022 11:58

My first was 3.5 hours. My second was 19 minutes. I am petrified of baby number three arriving in December. I have visions of her just falling out in the freezer aisle of Tesco.

Subsequent babies are faster I believe. A friend of mine was induced in hospital before 40weeks as the hospital felt she wouldn't make it there in time (with Baby#3)

minirollmuncher · 20/10/2022 12:06

First was 14 hours
Second was 86 minutes

Lockdownmum1010 · 20/10/2022 12:18

First was 8.5 hours, second was 40mins!

ChimneyPot · 20/10/2022 12:23

I was going to be induced on no4 as previous Labour were very quick and followed by major postpartum haemorrhages.
He arrived while I was waiting to be induced.

PuttingDownRoots · 20/10/2022 12:29

My second took longer... as in she took 2pushes and had a midwife present compared to delivering alone in one push (I go from early labour signs to baby coming out very quickly it seems, but there is some prior warning... the first was actually in hospital but I want anywhere near when they checked 10mins earlier so I was left to nap)

I was told to phone for midwives soon as I had any regular niggles.

Sarahcoggles · 20/10/2022 12:32

First baby - 5 weeks premature, 4 hours from very first mild twinge to birth.

Second baby - breech, elective caesarean at 39 weeks, no sign of any activity before then.

Inductions are a really bad idea for ladies with history of precipitous labour. They can react very badly to the hormones and can end up overstimulated

SatinHeart · 20/10/2022 12:40

First was 6 hours (only because he got stuck at the pushing, 1st stage was 45 minutes)

Second was 50 minutes.

Unless breech or other complicated presentation, I'd say you've got a good chance of a quick or quicker birth second time round. Worth discussing all your options for this with the midwife. For example I was told that sometimes a midwife can follow you in to the hospital in their car if there's a question mark over whether you are going to make it.

I was going to have a home birth second time round but declined in the end due to lack of ambulance availability during lockdown. I was told to call the labour ward at the first niggle (felt like mild period pain in my case), and say that I had a "history of precipitate labour". That was enough to allow me to go straight in. DC2 came out less than 15 minutes after I arrived.

Twizbe · 20/10/2022 12:45

First was 6 hour and second under 3 hours.

I've been told that a home birth would be a good idea for any more babies lol

123rd · 20/10/2022 12:48

Same as PPs I was advised to have a home birth with second child as first Labour was very quick.
Second was under 2 hours so glad I was at home

PinkPlantCase · 20/10/2022 12:54

Probably faster, I agree that a planned home birth sounds like a great idea for you

PinkButtercups · 20/10/2022 12:55

My cousin has had quick births. She's never made it to the hospital with her 3 kids.

First was about 40 minutes.
Second 15 minutes and third was 10 minutes!

Why the freezer aisle? That did make me giggle sorry 🤣.

Confuciusornis · 20/10/2022 13:01

Much faster. What took around 6 hours with the first took less than 15 minutes with the second.

Season0fTheWitch · 20/10/2022 13:13

My first was 9 hours, second was 3 hours but only 2 pushes and 3rd was 24 minutes from the first contraction to holding her in my arms. I've also been advised on a home birth if we have another!
