Is a VBAC labour as slow as typical first baby?

I know that second labours tend to be faster, but what if your first birth was a planned c-section performed before labour started before?

I'm assuming 2nd ones are quicker becuase your body has already laboured, so do you think is a VBAC as slow as a first time labour?

Have struggled to find any papers on this so would love some anecdotal evidence.

I wanted VBAC but unfortunately my second baby was not engaged either (like first) so had an elective

I can't be any more helpful but consider why you needed a section with your first and ask if it's likely to happen again with this baby

I have the same query, hoping for a VBAC in the next few weeks.

Ginmonkey84 · 15/10/2022 13:43

First birth was an elective c section with twins 2013. Had a home VBAC in 2020 with my little girl was told told expect a longish labour. Completely the opposite for me ended up less than 3hrs from first contraction to birth. So not always long.

I would assume so yes as your body hasn’t laboured before - as I understand it, second labours ‘speed up’ as your muscles remember what to do and are therefore more efficient. So if they haven’t contracted before it’s their first run if that makes sense. Good luck!

It makes sense that as your body hasn't laboured before, it would be like a first labour for you and possibly longer.

I had my emcs at 10cm and was told by the consultant that if I went for a vbac, my labour would be shorter because my body has done it before.

Rummikub · 16/10/2022 11:01

I had an emergency c section after 2 failed inductions. Body just wouldn’t respond.
Dc2 vbac was 9 hours from waters breaking and came early.

I was really surprised as I thought my body wasn’t able to.

What have the doctors advised?

Differentnamethistime · 18/10/2022 04:52

I had a VBAC for DC2 - waters broke and baby born 7 hours later. I was expecting it to take much longer!

RogersOrganismicProcess · 18/10/2022 05:10

Each of my five labours got longer. Baby number 1 was six hours. Number five was three days (of hell).

Thanks all! All very useful responses and obviously totally varied. Lovely to hear your stories, thank you for sharing.

There's no obvious reason why a c-section will be needed again as it was placenta previa last time.

Mainly trying to figure out how long for childcare I might need to find, but of course that is a how long is a piece of string question. Could be 3 hours like @Ginmonkey84 (here's hoping) or 3 days like poor @RogersOrganismicProcess (Googled your name, so interesting! Although I was a little more excited at first when I thought it said Orgasmic)

So interested and intrigued that you were able to have a home VBAC. I was under the assumption that due to previous sections and risk of abruption (no matter how small) it is advised that all VBAC are admitted to Labour Ward?
How was this facilitated?

CraftyCats · 24/12/2022 12:32

The typical advice is to go to L&D but yes it is can be facilitated if requested alongside an individualised care plan that’s usually implemented by the consultant midwife. There are actually quite a few home VBACs.

SamXantha · 24/12/2022 12:52

Oh, this is really positive! 😊

Smellywellyhoo · 24/12/2022 13:53

My second was very quick - she was born in the car but my first had been very quick as well.

Chanel05 · 24/12/2022 14:28

Update - I almost had a vbac but chose a section at the very last minute. Went into labour early and was ready to push within 4 hours of first twinge.

Kimberz · 26/12/2022 00:33

I had a VBAC 7 weeks ago, 2nd baby.

She was born 22 hours after waters went.
