Elective C-section... when is it likely to be?

Not to go into too much detail DC1 was failed induction leading to EMCS and he was only 7th centile birth weight.
Opting for elective C-section for DC2, currently 31 weeks.

It was mentioned by the consultant at 14 weeks and written down in my notes as 'requests ELCS at 39 weeks'.

I have a growth scan booked on 11th Oct and consultant appt straight after. I'm assuming it'll be booked in advance then?

Can someone else share their experience of ELCS - what gestation did you give birth, when was it booked in, did the date get pushed back/moved forward?

Mine was booked in around the 35 week mark for when I was 39+6, ended up happening a couple days early as my waters broke

LolaLoo2 · 27/09/2022 11:10

@BrownOrangeRed thank you
Was it then classed as EMCS? And Was it your first baby? I have so many worries over going into labour before the planned section day, however DC1 was late so wondering if there's any correlation.

Unless there is a medical need ELCS are booked for 39 weeks +. This is due to lung maturity.

When it is booked will differ depending on trust. Mine was booked at my 32 week appointment. In my trust they typically aren’t booked until after 36 weeks but I’ve been having a hard time with lots of different consultants all telling me different things so the lead consultant booked it for me

Mine was booked at 37 weeks with the consultabt for 39 weeks exactly. For elective it will be 39+ something

Second baby. Booked in for 39+1 and went ahead. Previous baby was 2 weeks overdue.

SquigglePigs · 27/09/2022 11:21

Mine was booked when I was about 34 weeks. DD was 39+3 when she was born.

LolaLoo2 · 27/09/2022 11:47

Seems it varies from trust to trust, hoping it gets booked in at 32 weeks but we will see 😬

My last ELCS was booked at 20 weeks with the consultant midwife. Might be worth asking to speak to them and getting booked in now

candycaneframe · 27/09/2022 11:52

Forgot to add it was booked for the day I turned 39w

I am having an ELCS, I’m 36 weeks now and just got my c section date through the post this week! It’s scheduled for 39+4 so I’m also a bit worried about going into labour beforehand. My others arrived at almost exactly that point 😅

BrownOrangeRed · 27/09/2022 12:25

Yes, was classed as a Cat2 EMCS as my waters broke 2 days before my ELCS was due. 2nd child, my first was Cat1 EMCS, was advised to go ELCS with my 2nd due to complications which happened during my first and that situation could be avoided by going with that birth plan.

Mylittlesandwich · 27/09/2022 12:29

My ELCS was booked in at 37 weeks for 40 weeks exactly. Pushed back to 39 weeks because of reduced movements.

Dogsandbabies · 27/09/2022 12:32

I have had three sections. All 'elective'. All booked at exactly 39 weeks. The last one I requested a change of date so went at 38+6 instead.

Dogsandbabies · 27/09/2022 12:33

First was booked in a lot later than the others. Baby was breech so we were hoping she would turn. The other two were booked in at 28 weeks.

serafinarose · 27/09/2022 12:35

Booked at 36 week appt. for 39+6. Went into labour at 39+3 so classed as EMCS although laboured for 13 hours until there was space.

Mine was booked at 28 weeks for 39 week exactly. Fingers crossed he doesn’t decide to come sooner…

Mine was booked in at 38 weeks and DS arrived via ELCS at 39+5. They said unless there was a good reason to they wouldn’t generally do it before 39 weeks in order to let their lungs develop. I did meet another lady who was also having an ELCS the same day as me and she was under 39 weeks but had had a lot of health problems in pregnancy that made it necessary to get baby out sooner rather than later.

I think it really depends on the reason for the section. Mine was because DS was measuring very big and they were concerned about me going over and the very real risk of him getting stuck etc. He did end up weighing a lot so it was the right choice! That decision was only made though after my 38 week scan which gave an accurate idea of his measurements and weight (which despite me being suspicious of did all end up being accurate).
