I need the wisdom of Mumsnet please. Waters breaking in bed - is this common?

Okay so this one of those questions that I'm quite about - but at antenatal classes my teacher was saying how birth is v instinctive and we tend to go for the safest opportunity and often we go into labour at night (and nocturnal animals do it during the day)

Also, my friend was saying that every night when she was 39+ weeks she'd go to bed convinced that "tonight was the night".

So what I'm thinking is that my waters could break at night and so I should get a mattress protector in case.

Or is this just worrying PFB behaviour??

Appreciate the wisdom of Mumsnet on this one.

hi my waters went in bed at 930 am and i didnt have a protector or a towel or anything and there was so much water (i had excess water aswell) we had to buy a new mattress as it had soaked all the way through and soaked the carpet by the bed and the stairs and the passenger seat in the car... by the time i arrived at the hospital i looked as if i had been for an impromptu swim before deciding to pop the hospital i will definitely be investing in a protector of some description for the next one
also WMMC i heard a small cracking kind of sound and then felt as if a balloon had burst on the top of my bump and then WHOOSH i felt the water!! but i definitely heard a noise first in my semi-sleeping state!!

Hehheheh - this is the one bit of labour I'm actually really looking forward to - I had ARM last time which hurt like buggery (well I assume buggery hurts) but at least I had the satisfaction of drenching the consultant!

My waters broke with a loud pop as i was watching most haunted halloween special on my lovely leather sofa. at least we could just wipe it clean!

I had a mattress protector, you can get them for about £4 from tescos, i put it over the cot now whilst i'm changing ds so that his wee doesn't wet the mattress! my dh also put one of those protectors you get from the garage when your car has been in for a service on the passenger seat. came in very useful on the way to the hospital.

don't recall hearing my waters going during labour for dd but before that with ds I had a hindwaters break and my friend, who was in the room, also heard the very definite 'ping'

I used a Pampers bed mat and a towel last time, however because of the way I was sleeping (bottom hanging half way off the bed!) it didn't quite work because when they went I leaked over the edge of the bed! They went at 1ish in the morning but I just woke up and realised that I was rather wet!

What amazed me was when the hospital asked if I was sure they'd gone!

I've put the (new) bed mat and towel to hang over the side of the bed this time

Mine broke in bed at 2.30am with ds - the night we bought the mattress protector

My waters went in Labour, I remember saying to the Midwife " I think that was my waters" as I heard/felt a pop. But she said " no you wet your self"

Turned out it was my waters, I had low fluid and spent a lot of the time in the Bath just after the "pop" so she had not noticed.

My waters broke at night but it was more of a leak than a flood so no mattress damage.

First time waters broke in birth pool five minutes before birth, don't know how much there was !
Second time waters went before I got in the pool, there was enough to fill a sanny pad, but it took a while before it soaked through so would not have been a problem had I been in bed. I did not have a matress protector, I kept a bucket by the bed just in case.

How funny, mine went with a POP too at 3am. I was fast asleep and it woke me up - it was so loud it was as if someone had burst a balloon in the room! I jolted awake and then some seconds later felt the gush. DP was dispatched to get towels, so managed to spare the mattress.

As per others would recommend for a leaky baby/boobs though.

Mine went both times in bed when I was 38 weeks, 4 days and about 10 hours pregnant! Both times heard a pop, got up and it trickled down my legs, so no bed damage. However, with number 2 it must have just been a bit of it that came out as I had a sudden gush a few hours later, but this was in the hospital by then. Both times waters broke before any real contractions.
