Has anyone else bled in this way?

Just to satisfy my curiosity.

Rewind 6 years and 2 months to when i was pregnant(bled on/off) and trying to induce labour as i was 8 days over.Dp and i had sex to try and get things going and 40 minutes later i began bleeding bright red blood ,it even ran down the loo for a while.
Anyway the birth centre i was booked in at said no way could i go there so told dp to ring 999 and go to nearest A&E.
We were absolutely terrified as noone ever told me that this could happen.
I was examined and poked and prodded for ages and told i was 3-4 cms dilated, and they really hurt me in doing so(worse than labour pain)
They fobbed the bleed off as me being neurotic and it being a bloody show.

When i got pregnant with dd2 i asked the consultant and he said that sometimes when the cervix dilates it can rupture vessels

Didn't have a bleed with dd2

Was he right?

Another question i have is why have i never had braxton hicks or 'labour pains'?

I only feel the pain at the last minute(not that i am complaining) when practically fully dilated and pushing?

Am i a freak?

Dunno why you didnt feel braxton hicks. I felt them from so early on it was ridiculous. They started to get uncomfortable when I got past 30 weeks. Labour pain was really really strong.

Oddly enough, when I got to the pushing stage, once I was pushing, I didnt feel the pain anymore.

i had a tiny bleed just before labour started with ds. Went in, they were twitchy about blood, did a scan and an internal and I was already dilating. Wanted to keep me in, I insisted on going for a walk and at the farthest end of the park the contractions started thick and fast. Ds born 3 hours later.

With dd I started with what felt like an enormous bleed (I was on the loo). Went in and was quite panicked by amount of blood. Really didn't feel right. Hung about for a ocuple of hours (middle of the night), they didn't want to send me home but nothing happening, did an internal, not at all dilated and then dd decided to make her entrance and was there about 90 mins later.

I'm pregnant again and have lots of questions about this so hoepfully someone knowledgable will reply!

Beauregard · 20/01/2008 20:57

The midwife used to ask me if i was having regular braxton hicks and i would reply no never
At one point 3 days before i had dd1 the midwife was checking me out as i had ahd another bleed and she said "ooh you are having a contraction, this baby will be born this weekend"

???

Both labours have been odd
once admitted to labour ward following the 999 dash, i felt nothing .Examined by the head consultant and he declared me a 5cm dilated and broke my waters.Nothing happened for over an hour then they started to hook me up to the drip to feed the synitocon(sp?)and then BAM.
dd born about 4 hours later.

dd2 no pain nothing then a couple of period type pains so i jump in the bath make a cuppa and some toast then BAM ,waters break all ove r the lounge ,i crawl upstairs and dd2 is delivered by dp about 20 minutes later.

I had mild bleeding (not really bright red blood) throughout my pg with DS.

With both, I felt my uterus contracting from as early as twelve weeks! Sounds mad, I know. As the uterus got larger, so I felt them more.

I dont know if it has a connection with the hideous period pains I also suffer, but the whole area seems generally over-sensitive.

Beauregard · 20/01/2008 21:02

That is interesting VVV because pre dd's i had horrendous period pains due to Endometriosis.

I bled bright red blood with my DD. It began towards the start of labour (about an hour in), although the contractions were already well underway (about 3 mins apart). I remember having sudden diarrohea (sp?) and it starting then. We went straight to hospital as we had been told during anti-natal that it's potentially not a good sign (tho' I can't for the life of me remember why!). I was about 3cm dilated on arrival and I seem to remember the bleeding going on for quite a while. Certainly it was something the midwife kept checking upon.

Incidentally, I had a bad bleed at about 14 weeks and the first question I was asked when I arrived at hospital was whether I had had sex in the last couple of hours.

Thanks for the replies

Now one thing i am wondering is ..that when pregnant with dd2 i had a low lying placenta until 34 weeks ,could it have been possible that that was the case with dd1?

Maybe that was what they taught you at antenatal TheRedQueen?

you could have an eroded cervix. I had that and bled a little after sex for years. eventually i plucked up the courage to find out why (numpty) and they told me to take vitamin E, which, amazingly, fixed it.

Beauregard · 20/01/2008 21:18

Have never bled after sex before this or after though.

It is normal to bleed a little bit when your cervix is starting to dilate. Lots of women who are 41 weeks bleed a little, especially if they have had a sweep. The blood comes from the bag of waters coming away from the lower part of the uterus, a completely natural event although putting it as 'vessels rupturing' makes it sound abnormal and scarey. A fair few women do not feel the bh or early contractions so you are not a freak, just lucky, or unlucky as it must be quite unsettling in late pregnancy knowing it can happen so quickly.

whomovedmychocolate · 20/01/2008 21:52

I bled throughout labour - red blood - was v scary but mw said 'normal, don't worry'. Didn't know any different so took her word for it. I assumed it was them trying to tinker around down there and bashing bits

I started bleeding when my waters broke, rushed into hospital and dd was delivered by c-section straight away. This was a lot of bright red blood though. Turned out to be because vasa previa and vci where unprotected blood vessels from the placenta were crossing the cervix. If this had been the case for you, you would have been told afterwards though and your little one would not have survived without c-section. My advice these days is if there is any bleeding then go in straight away. Could be bad, could be nothing much, but you need to know.

funnypeculiar · 20/01/2008 22:22

I beld through my pg with ds (every few days or so) and a few times with dd - also bled quite a lot (ie throughout duration, rather than large quanitities) during both labours. Like you, dd's labour started off with a reasonably big bleed.
I was diagnosed with cervical erosion -essentially more blood flowing round cervix in pg, some women therefore bleed more/cervix can be easily irritated (I would have thought sex was a prime eg - we were told no shagging so can't talk from experience her). I thought of it as sort of like a scab, that would easily be knocked, starting off the bleeding again. Can't remember if I was told that, or made it up through

Cervical erosion is really common, apparently, but very under-diagnosed, as it requires visual internal, which they are obviously unkeen to do to pg ladies. Thank God.

Tommy · 20/01/2008 22:27

at our maternity hospital, they offer a service called "Birth Afterthoughts" when you can talk through your birth experience with a midwife (who has your notes with her) howveer long after the birth it is.

I had a session as I really wanted to know exactly what had happened to me after DS3 was born and it was really useful. Maybe your hospital has something similar?

Beauregard · 20/01/2008 22:54

That sounds interesting Tommy.
