C-Section Sickness

CountryGirl189 · 26/07/2022 16:13

Hi all,

I’m having my c-section in just under two weeks and the nerves are starting to set in 😬

Whenever I have had a general anaesthetic before, I have always been violently sick after, despite them giving me anti-sickness meds.

Obviously I’ll be having a spinal for the section rather than a GA, but anyone who gets very sick like me after a GA, did you find the same happened during/after your section?

Thanks!

I get very sick after GA but was fine with a section, it's different meds

Greybeardy · 26/07/2022 16:27

the mechanisms for nausea/vomiting during a c-section are different to those for an ‘average’ GA. It is not at all uncommon for women to feel sick/actually vomit during a section. The commonest (and easiest to fix) cause is a drop in BP due to the spinal working well. Some of the drugs that may be required for surgical reasons cause nausea and if they are needed it would be standard to give those with anti-emetics.

@missbipolar @Greybeardy thank you both!

This and getting another dreaded cannula are my main two worries about the whole thing - which probably sounds daft in comparison to what is actually happening!

I just didn’t want to be vomiting so bad I couldn’t hold my baby, but hopefully I’ll feel a bit gippy and they’ll be able to sort it quickly!

I get sick from everything! Cars, boats, planes, anxiety, alcohol etc etc.
I was SO worried I was going to be sick during my c section. I told the anaesthetist and he was amazing. He gave me anti sickness meds in my cannula and topped them up whenever I felt a bit queesy.
I was fine, and asking for toast 1.5 hours after!

CountryGirl189 · 26/07/2022 20:34

@tinylittlecaterpillar so good to hear and glad they kept on top of it!

How did you find the cannula? The thought of it is giving me the worst anxiety which I’m worried will make me feel sicky!

I had an emergency c section with lots of trauma and drugs and I wasn’t sick.

Then I had a calm planned c section and was sick once. Felt instantly better and wasn’t unwell again.

I've never had a GA, but I did feel sick during my section. It made me feel a bit panicky, but I told the anaesthetist and he very quickly added some meds that made it go away - it felt like seconds. It's really normal and they're prepared for it.

tinylittlecaterpillar · 26/07/2022 20:45

The cannula was fine! As was the spinal block. But I'm not too bad with needles. Are you worried it will be painful? If so can you get some Emla cream?

Allaboutthecheesecake · 26/07/2022 20:45

Mine was fine , felt sick he gave me anti sickness during procedure and felt fine within less than a minute . Good luck all will be fine

DinosaursEatMan · 26/07/2022 20:48

I vomited repeatedly for about ten hours after my c section. (Was ok after a general previously). On the ward I was told by nursing staff that the theatre team hadn’t written down that I could have anti-sickness meds, and that the doctors were too busy to come up onto the ward to see me. Maybe mine was a one-off, but I’d recommend making sure to ask just in case. It was a notoriously bad maternity unit though.

NoWordForFluffy · 26/07/2022 20:51

Yes, sorry. Very sick with spinal and with GA. I just don't do surgery too well. Hopefully you're not like me!

CountryGirl189 · 26/07/2022 20:52

@tinylittlecaterpillar I’m usually okay with needles and don’t really have a fear - or I didn’t think I did until at year when I had my general and the cannula was very painful going in!

I have put on my birth plan that I’d like a lidocaine shot first as emla doesn’t really do much for me, but a family member had her section two days ago and they wouldn’t give her one, so I’m trying to brace myself for them spearing my hand 😅

They can give you anti sickness into your drip. I had a big blood pressure dip that caused strong nausea

EHCP999 · 26/07/2022 20:55

I was fine after my first elcs but very sick after my second, even after the anti sickness injection. I was given diamorphine second time which clearly didn't agree with me. I'll avoid it in future!

nocoolnamesleft · 26/07/2022 20:55

Tell the anaesthetist that this is what is worrying you. They can get in there early with the anti emetic strategies.

Orangesare · 26/07/2022 20:58

I would ask for someone who’s really good at putting canulas in to do it. Say you are hard to get canulas in and get really nervous and upset. make it sound like you’re the issue so not to offend.
I had to had a canula in labour (it was VBAC) and the first midwife couldn’t get it in thankfully she went and got someone else for go number 2. Unlike the poor baby at 3 days old who needed a blood test and they were wanting to try every limb. I stopped them after two goes and they had to use her heel instead.

Apollonia1 · 26/07/2022 21:01

I had a c-section and felt fine during it.

Later on in the day after the c-section I got sick a few times. I'd suddenly feel really hot and clammy (when I'm normally a cold person) and then had to vomit. This happened about 3 times, and then I felt fine again (and hungry! Had to wait a few hours for food).

Goodnewsday · 26/07/2022 21:56

I was so paranoid about the being sick thing as I have low blood pressure anyway and I think it’s usually caused as soon as the spinal goes in when your blood pressure drops too much. When it actually came to the time I didn’t even think about being sick once! Please don’t be nervous, I am the biggest wimp on earth and the only nippy bit was the cannula! Everything else was such a non event.

The next day I was feeling good and all was going well, was getting ready to leave about lunch time then all of a sudden felt really sick. I ended up lying in the bed being sick (which was not fun when your abs have been split in two 😂), not painful, just a horrible feeling! I was too scared to make a run for the toilet so just shouted for help. They gave me something to sort it out and I was fine to go home an hour later

stayinghometoday · 26/07/2022 21:57

I had a spinal block- wasn't sick. I do get sick after GA.

CountryGirl189 · 27/07/2022 13:30

@Goodnewsday Thank you!

I never like to think I’m a wimp, but I definitely am 😂 then after I always think, “you were being an absolute tit over nothing” 😂
