Sleepy 3 week old

Hi everyone would really appreciate your input. My 19 day old spends literally most of the day asleep. He is awake in the mornings for maybe 1 hour 2 hours absolutely max but other than that fast asleep. So that's 22 out of 24 hours a day! He does feed and has wet nappies but I just find this all strange as my daughter was up far more than this (crying mainly!).

Should I be worried? The midwives don't seem concerned but I just don't feel reassured.

Absolutely ok, all babies are different. Remember when they’re sleeping they are also growing & developing .So long as baby feeds well with wet nappies and bowel movements he’ll be fine. Congratulations btw

My DS2 was like this. Loved his sleep for a very long time.
Now he can be a pain, I miss the magic of boob getting him to sleep within mins too Smile

My newborn is same age and he sleeps a lot too. Remember he is awake when feeding too. As long as the usual checks are fine, temperature, nappies etc then it sounds normal.

CandyLeBonBon · 20/07/2022 20:56

Very very normal. So easy to say 'don't worry', but as a mum of 3, it's true.

The first 2-3 weeks they can often be very sleepy (not always, but very common), and it feels like they should be more awake.

I'm assuming that you feed them several times a day?

Totally fine, totally normal, and in my experience, almost as soon as you've googled 'does my newborn sleep too much?', they start doing longer stretches awake. Like much longer stretches.

My DM always said that the first three weeks are to help you to recover from birth.

Enjoy the newborn cuddles, op.

I nearly posted the exact same thing a week ago with a 3 week old. I’m now looking after a 4 week old who is proving trickier to put to sleep… so basically exactly what @barneymcgroo said.
