Induction

Hello, I'm at the hospital currently waiting for covid test before being induced. Am I going to be put on a ward? Will I go to the delivery suite? I have no idea what to expect after this?

What are you being induced for? If waters are already gone, you might go straight to labour suite. Every other reason, it'll be the antenatal ward.

You'll be on a bed in a bay. Baby will be monitored, then you'll be examined to see what the correct course of induction will be. If you wish to continue, they'll insert the pessary/gel/balloon/do nothing if ready for ARM. Baby will be monitored again if anything was inserted to make sure they're still happy. After that you're free to do what you like. Sometimes you can even go home! If not, then you'll be checked periodically.

After that, it's a waiting game. The aim is to dilate your cervix 2+cm so your waters can be broken. If you go into labour, and/or your waters break on their own, all to the good!

Once you're 2+cm, then it's a wait for a space on delivery suite. Once there, more monitoring, and waters broken. If contractions start from that, great, if not, then after an hour or two the drip goes up.

Best of luck!

I'm only 37+6. I'm being induced due to reduced movements

Hi can I leave induction and go home to wait for labour to start naturally? If my pessary hasnt worked after 24 hours. I dont like the idea of forcing the baby out through induction.

@Rba2022 I think you can but if you don't want to be induced you would be better waiting altogether, not getting the first pessary then leaving. Quite often the first one doesn't do much anyway.

Why not just wait? Unless you've already been started?

I was induced due to RM last year. You'll start off on a ward with a bed in a bay. There's a few methods to induction - I was induced with pessary and gel (the 6hr ones). They monitored baby on the ctg for half an hour then inserted the first one. I had to stay lying down for half an hour and then was allowed to walk around, bounce on the ball etc.
They then put you back on the ctg monitor for another half hour before giving the second pessary 6hrs later.

You'll be moved to the labour ward once you're in active labour (around 4cm)

@Lou98 ive already been started and I just keep thinking to myself I shouldnt have come. Im torn between continuing and going home. I just want to have a natural labour. Reason for induction is GD, however im diet controlled, levels are always within range and every scan, appointment etc have been fine, no concerns. So im just thinking, maybe i should have refused. I was just scared to say no i think

@Rba2022 ah I see! I was induced because of RFM and they told me at the time that if they're inducing for that they keep you in until you've had baby so they can monitor them once they've started (obviously still a choice as they can't physically keep you there but it's what they recommend)

However, you don't need to do anything you don't want to and if you'd rather go home you can. The concern I think would be if your waters have broken. I don't really know the risks of going home though so it would definitely be worth talking to the midwives about and asking

Rba2022 · 01/07/2022 07:09

@Lou98 my waters havent broken, the pessary was only in for about 8 hours. The midwives said its safe to pull out and go home if i wish. Which is what i did. I know they would want to do this again once i hit 40 weeks. But i cant through it again, it just doesn't feel right. Im leaning towards an elective c section now.
