Is this a waste of money? (hypnobirthing course)

I'm currently pregnant with my first and really want to try hypnobirthing as a few of my friends did it and loved it, said it made their births really calm and not stressful. So I want to give it a go. A place local to me is doing a promotion - £190 for 3 sessions, a book and some other bits. It seems a lot of money though. Can I just find literature on the Internet for free? Or is this the kind of money I'm looking to spend? Trying to save as much as I can as my mat pay is rubbish so don't want to waste my money. Already signed up for NCT and that was expensive so cautious of signing up for too many things.

It is super worth while, but is alot of money. The Positive Birth company are really good and I’m sure are much cheaper

I have done a hypnobirthing course and found it really useful face to face - it was a similar price to that. However if money is tight you could do the online positive birthing company course I think it's £39? I haven't done it myself but it gets quite good reviews.

Hypnobirthing got me through the first 3-4 days of labour. It all went to shit after that – no fanjos opening like a flower – but it was still enormously useful in remaining calm during an EMCS.

I did the online course from Positive Birth Company which was £42. You can’t necessarily hypnobirth your way to an ideal labour: the baby hasn’t done the course and might be in the wrong position and pounding away at your cervix to no avail. But it can help you keep your cool while that’s happening.

I recommend the book "mindful hypnobirthing" by Sophie Fletcher. I borrowed it from my local library. It comes with free meditation tracks that you can download; www.mindfulmamma.co.uk/mindful-hypnobirthing/mindful-hypnobirthing-downloads/ obviously I didn't pay for a course so I can't really compare, but I did think it was very helpful in changing your mindset & trusting your body.

I would also remember that if things do not go to plan and you have a more medicalised birth than you planned, then that is ok as well.

Hmm I did it and can't say I'm a huge advocate for it. It honestly just pissed me off during labour when my dh tried to put my tapes on!

Hi op I think it's a waste of money. There is excellent free resources online and also books you can buy or free ebooks. It's all about breathing and visualising ( you can learn that from YouTube)

earsup · 22/06/2022 14:32

very popular in my area with all the young 30's mums who have tons of cash to splash...but its very expensive...lady who does it charges hundreds....her massages are also over 70 quid....yet seems to be busy...

neverwakeasleepingbaby · 22/06/2022 14:32

Not a fan. But I don't find breathing exercises relaxing in general, so depends on what you think will work for you. It may work better for second babies because you know what you're meant to be doing a bit more than the first!

RedWingBoots · 22/06/2022 14:36

I got a couple of books, one of which came with CDs, from a friend. As a PP said it is useful for staying calm regardless of what is going on around you.

tiggergoesbounce · 22/06/2022 14:40

I did it and found it really useful. I recommend it to anyone whos pregnant, so i think if you have the money spare, then go for it.

I'm pregnant with my 3rd and have bought the naked doula package (when it was on sale) she's fab! Really explained the purpose of contractions and how your hormones work etc and lots of breathing exercises etc
It's on an app with lifetime access if you had more kids and it was under £50 I think.
I'm hoping it'll help me for this birth x

EdgeOfACoin · 28/06/2022 03:47

The online birth-ed hypnobirthing podcast is good and around £40.

There are lots of cheaper options out there, including apps and books. I'm not sure how much extra benefit you get from an in-person course.

hammsalllad · 28/06/2022 04:35

Complete waste of money.

There are plenty of resources online.

Ultimately nobody knows how labour is going to go. No amount of money and learning to breathe a certain way will guarantee a perfect stress free birth.

I would do some research online, watch some videos and go in with an open mind.

Dinneronmybfpillow · 28/06/2022 05:35

I did a face to face course with DD1 and still feel angry at having to part with such a large amount of cash for it! In no way better than the books/resources online and the woman spouted a heap of quite dangerous advice alongside it - which given how completely unregulated they are is possible. At least with PBC etc they are so well established there would be a risk of damage to the brand if they were too 'out there' with their information or if they gave truly dangerous advice.

Ultimately it might be a waste of money if you need a lot of intervention but you have no way of knowing. I had two C sections so it would have been a complete waste of money for me!
