Induction Planning Tips

Hi!

Just wondered if anyone could share some early induction planning tips? Anything to bring to hospital, know about the procedure, help to get the mindset ready… all appreciated! (I have spoken in depth to midwives and consultants but looking for info from personal experiences)

Hopefully this post will then be helpful to anyone else who will be going through an induction in the future 😃

Thank you

Hi, I can't help but I do have the same questions

When are you being induced ? I'm being induced 38+1 in 3 weeks

I have no info, asked my midwife and she said I have to go online and do some antenatal classes which explains all....it didn't

I've packed my hospital bag
I'm under the impression it may take a while but also aware it may be quicker than I imagine
It's all the unknown for me

My first was a quick spontaneous birth so hoping it won't be long and drawn out !

Induction can take up to 3 days so be prepared for boredom. Mine was only 24 hours but wasn’t allowed to leave hospital grounds and was bored stiff.
induced labour can be more painful so mentally prepare for that too.

@Danikm151 I've booked an early epidural ! Well my consultant has sold it to me that way as I had a traumatic first time. We shall see
Had no time for pain relief last time
I went from closed cervix 4am to fully dilated 8:50 - no examinations/no monitoring just telling me I wasn't in labour and would be going home - then saying oh no you're 10cm,let's get you to delivery suite( I was kept in for a bleed overnight) but was labouring well it just wasn't picked up
Anyway this time with monitoring and hopefully an epidural hoping it may be different

Take stuff to keep you busy but don't expect to be able to concentrate on it! I downloaded 3 days worth of tv/films to my tablet but couldn't concentrate in the end. Luckily for me I went into Labour within 2 hours. Also, snacks because hospital food is not good!

I was induced at 37w 5d.

Had to call the maternity unit at 8am to make sure they had space then made my way in.

Shown to a bed and set up with a monitor on a band round my belly and a BP cuff for about an hour so then could monitor baby and me and make sure everything was ok.

Internal exam and the propess pessary was inserted, then another 30 minutes of laying on the bed with monitor on belly and BP cuff.

By then it was just about lunch time and they were giving out sandwiches so ate those.

Then me and DH just sat around talking, went on wanders around the hospital and basically tried to fill time. All a bit boring really.

Got to about 5pm and it was clear nothing would be happening any time soon so I sent DH home, had dinner, read magazines, watched telly, played on my phone......

It was really really really really hot in the hospital. So I spent a lot of time wandering around trying to find air con vents or windows to get some relief. Luckily the hospital I was in were really lax with security so I was able to go outside and even took a walk down to the local Tesco Express at 2am for more snacks, drinks and magazines.

Got very little sleep due to the heat and not a lot happened over night.

Next morning had breakfast and then about 10am they put the belly band and BP cuff back on for some more monitoring. All OK but quiet on the labour front.

DH showed up about 11am.

More waiting around then at about 1pm they did an internal and decided I was dilated enough to break my waters. That was fine, felt weird but didn't hurt just a bit uncomfortable then a huge gush.

Went for another walk. Hadn't been warned that waters could keep gushing so got soaked through.

Contractions started really quick. Was offered a ball to bounce on which I didn't like. I opted to just pace around and lean on the bed when the contractions were bad.

About 5ish I got given the gas n air which I really liked. Felt absolutely trolleyed, like I'd had several rounds of shots really quick.

Then about an hour later I suddenly needed to be sick, was once and then told the midwife that I needed to push. I was still on the ward at this point as they didn't think I was ready for the delivery suite.

She said I didn't need to push and baby had probably just moved but that she'd check when she had finished up her paperwork.

I told DH to get ready to catch as I was going to push. MW gave a big sigh and said 'fine I'll check you now then'. Had a quick look and ran out of the room shouting that she needed someone to help move me to delivery now as I was crowning.

I climbed on to the bed and was pushing as they rolled me down the corridor. Got into the delivery room, one push and DD was born.

2nd degree tear so had to have some stitches which were done while I had gas n air and DH cuddled with DD.

Had to stay overnight and was released at 8am the next morning.
