C section at the Rosie

Hello.
I am due to have a c section at the Rosie hospital in Cambridge next month. I was just wondering if anyone has had a baby there and could tell me what it was like? What are the midwives like on the postnatal ward? It’s my first baby and I’m very nervous.
Thank you! X

Hi @Pengu1n1990 I had an ELCS there in November 2019 so a bit ago. The CARES team who cover the lead into the caesarean were great, the postnatal stay less so - they didn't give me pain relief on time and it led to a cascade of issues such that I had to put in a formal complaint. I understand that they now allow women to self administer pain relief so hopefully that will have improved (I'm booked for a repeat ELCS there in October, so it had better have improved)!!!

Basically, I'd recommend you have your wits about you and don't be afraid of chasing (getting your partner to chase) when things don't happen as they should. Good luck!

I had one towards the end of last year

I agree that the CARES team were fantastic, the lead up and the actual surgery itself went well and the staff were fantastic

on the postnatal ward - it could’ve been better but it wasn’t awful. They’re understaffed, I only ever saw a midwife when I was due my injections. Everything else was done by a maternity care assistant. Standard pain relief is given for you to self administer. I did have a problem with my bowel from the surgery and reacted badly to the medication given and again, aside from the dr that came round I still didn’t see the midwife which again IMO was bad.

I work at the actual hospital (not the Rosie) and so overall I’d say it was ‘alright’. The staff are nice but just busy and not many of them. If you need something don’t be afraid to ask ask ask! You’re just as important as everybody else.

partners aren’t provided with food and they won’t be given meals, however you and your partner can enter the kitchen for toast/drinks/fruit and snacks 24/7 so it’s pretty easy for partners to get them, just not meals.

@Weathergirl1 @TiredEyes1991 Thank you so much both of you, really helpful to know -especially about the food and pain relief. Fingers crossed it all goes to plan!

I didn’t have a section but I was kept in postnatally for a week after my birth in October, and the care I received was amazing. I couldn’t rate the staff highly enough. Sadly once I was moved down to the postnatal ward from the obstetric close obs ward it was much busier and they had less time to support me as closely, but I still would rate them highly. They’re understaffed and breastfeeding support is basically nonexistent though. Your partner can stay as long as they like so they’ll hopefully be able to help you if you need anything. And remember you can order Deliveroo and have your partner meet the driver at reception, highlight of my stay 😃

Thank you so much for this! So helpful. Also Deliveroo 👌🏽

I had an elective c-section at the Rosie last week. It was a really positive experience and the theatre team, especially the anaesthetist, were fantastic. The post-natal ward was noisy, and luckily I was able to be moved to a private en-suite amenity room which made all the difference. I would definitely recommend a private room if you can - I think you can either pre-book for a cost or you can ask if there’s one available when you get to the ward.

Pengu1n1990 · 26/06/2022 20:54

@Minta85 thank you for sharing your experience, and I’m so glad it was positive. We are hoping to grab a side room and have discussed this with the midwife, however, she said it’s just what’s available on the day so fingers crossed!
I hope both you and baby are doing well and recovery is speedy for you.

Hello! It was so positive and calm. Whole process was great and I am nearly two weeks post op, and I’m very much up and about as normal.
staff were so kind and was offered pain relief but do make sure you keep asking if it doesn't arrive. I would recommend it to anyone!
sending you lots of luck!

Hi, I’m having elective c-section next month. I spoke to midwife and ob already and was told that I’ll be added to waiting list so no set date. Have any one else have been added to the waiting list? How much notice do you normally get? I’m bit stressed out as it’s my first baby
