Has anyone actually, ahem, swallowed that great (male) myth about kick starting labour?

You know, the one about swallowing semen to get things going? The ante-natal boards seem to be awash with women saying that they are not that desperate but presumably someone, somewhere has tried it?

Btw, I've got an elective c-section coming up so this is not something I am considering!!

7 months on I look at the attempts I went through to try to bring on labour and not be induced and I realise I was quite mental.

But my midwife did reckon it was 3 to 10 times more powerful taken orally than internally and I wanted to give birth on the birthing unit. I didn't. I gave birth in a theatre with my legs in stirrups and a nasty taste of dodgy orange juice in my mouth....

I tried it several times (sheer desperation) did nothing!

Ladies, one of the girls on my AN thread made a good point, if it is so much better absorbed through the gut why is the chemical equivalent given to us in pessary form rather than orally? just a thought

Very good point MrsMcJ!!

How are you? Not that desperate yet I take it?!!

I was getting desperate enough to try this but I ended up having a chicken madras and my waters broke that night.

Ledodgy · 19/01/2008 14:29
  • ended up having a madras instead I mean.

MrsMcJnr · 19/01/2008 15:00

I've heard that stuff in semen softens the cervix, so application of the substance in question directly to the cervix makes sense to me. I'm all for a shag to get things started! But swallowing it? UUUUUUUUUUUURRGGGH!!!! Off to Google proper evidence.....

HappiesGlamore · 23/01/2008 17:22

swallowing it?? lolol

no, semen has stuff in it which helps ripen up the cervix, if its ready to go anyway, and helps to get labour underway thus. it would need to be 'inserted' into your vagina to reach your cervix tho...

try shagging doggy style, thats whatll do it. (worked for me)

derah · 23/01/2008 17:28

Nope, couldn't find anything. Definitely a myth started by a man!!
