My waters broke yesterday and they booked me for an induction on tuesday if haven't gone into labour by then, still nothing happening now and it's 30 hours since waters went. But baby still moving around and sleeping in transverse not head down. Don't want a caesarean really scared will be mauled around by gung-ho doctors! Anyone been in the same boat?

are you sure baby is transverse?

there is no way to deliver a transverse baby vaginally, so yes, you would have a c.section. has anyone suggested ECV?

BetsyBoop · 12/01/2008 20:04

Lulu, I had ECV with my first pregnancy & did loads of research & I'm almost sure that you can't do ECV once the waters have gone, as there isn't sufficient fluid to allow the baby to turn.

readinginbed - are you definitely sure baby is transverse? I'm just suprised that they are happy for you to stay at home, as (and I'm not trying to scare you here, just offering the facts) if you go into labour there is a much greater risk of cord prolapse (the umbilical cord entering the vagina ahead of the baby) with a transverse lie - with a normal ceph position the head normally "plugs" the cervix preventing this from happening.

The only option for safe delivery of a tranverse lie is a c/s I'm afraid. If there is any doubt about the presentation I would ask for a scan to confirm it before they do the c/s

You need to go and get a scan tomorrow - you can't wait till Tuesday if your waters have gone and the baby may be transverses.

Emergency caesarians aren't as bad as they are cracked up to be though - I had one, and if they know they are doing it, it's pretty straightforward, one person putting the epidural in, then you get wheeled into theatre - about ten folks in there but they are all very kind, they talk you through what they are doing and you get to see the baby come out after about five minutes -seems much quicker though.

DD turned at 38 weeks btw, so you MIGHT have a chance that your baby might go head down. My worst sodding luck though was that she kept coming out from head down and bopping around because her head was too big to fit through my pelvis

Hopefully tomorrow will bring better news but insist of having a scan tomorrow. If you have to go down to the delivery ward and sit there moaning - do so, it's too much of a risk to let you go into labour naturally if the baby is transverse.

My DS was transverse until I was 37 weeks and then he turned but if he had not turned by week 38 I was going to be booked in for a CS. Are you sure the baby is transverse? If you are, then I would be heading for the labour ward tonight!!!!! There is no way to deliver a transverse baby vaginally!

not sure baby is transverse, only looks that way because big bulges either side which i presume are head and bottom! Had scan yesterday as small for dates and they didn't seem worried so presume from reading your posts that baby isn't transverse after all, a HUGE relief, thank you!
What is ECV? sounds pleasant...
Still haven't gone into labour naturally but i did have threatened prem labour at 32 weeks and they gave me an injection to stop that so maybe my body is too confused now, i certainly am!

3 transvers lies equalled 3 c-sections for me.

WestCountryLass · 12/01/2008 21:59

Well would hope if you were scanned yesterday then they would have flagged up transverse baby.

You could try going for a walk tomorrow (find somewhere with lots of steps), eating some spicey food and some nipple stimulation.

Good luck!

look up optimal fetal positioning to adopt positions which assist baby to turn head down. NCT helpline for this is cath on 08704239258. Sit very upright, walk around on all fours for quite a while as this uses gravity to encourage babies head and back to turn against the front of your stomach. walk sideways up and down stairs to create momemtum to roll baby. Hope this helps.

BetsyBoop · 12/01/2008 22:35

I would be pretty confident baby is NOT transverse if they scanned you yesterday & said nothing. If baby was in a transverse lie they would have booked you in for a c/s without question

ECV = external cephalic version - they turn the baby manually into a cephalic (head down) position - I had it done with my first pregnancy as DD was breech, wasn't exactly pleasurable, but wasn't that bad.

I'm sure Lulu will be back in a minute to say nipple stim & lots of sex to kick-start your labour

lulumama · 12/01/2008 22:38

oh yes, bit of sex and nipple stim never did any harm.. although not entirely sure re sex if waters have gone due to infection... so maybe a DIY orgasm and nipple stim.....was it your forewaters that went, or a hindwater leak? if forewaters, then no sex, i don;t think.also, if you feel ill or feverish then you must go in immediately.

if you have been examined and scanned and baby was trasnverse, you would know about it, and most likely be kept in, as has been said.

so keep positive, and hope that baby makes an appearance before tuesday
