Bleeding after birth.

I've had a quick look in old threads and can't see this covered anywhere, so I'm sorry if I'm doing a subject that has been done to death. DS was born vaginally 15 days ago, had a second degree tear and I'm still bleeding and I just wondered how much longer this is likely to go on for? I thought it was slowing down a week ago but it is still going strong! Just wondering what seemed to be the norm.

fraid I had this for about five weeks - and by the time it had got down to very light bleeding/discharge I had my first period!!!

i had a second degree tear too.

think it is normal to have up to six weeks bleeding. i think what you need to watch out for is it getting heavier/red again - most probably a sign you are overdoing it, but i think could be a sign of infection

Not sure if you meant bleeding from your tear, or your post-partum bleeding. I had a ceasarean both times, but I think the bleeding is the same post partum. First time I bled for nearly 6 weeks. Second time I bled for about three weeks, but the second week it kept stopping and starting.

afraid it can be up to 8 wks i have been told - esp if you are breast feeding but it shouldnt be dark red all that time or contain clots

I bled for about a month (following episiotomy & stitches). Midwife said to let GP know if it was significantly heavier than a normal period, stopped & then restarted heavily, or blood smelled horrible (!) as any of these could suggest an infection - otherwqise perfectly normal.

I was really worried about this and asked midwife. She said only to worry if there were clots or if it was 'smelly', she also added if I was infected she would not be standing so close to me because of the smell (nice!). I had a section and seemed to bleed forever. (probably more like 6 weeks). HOpe everything else is going well.

Oh! I thought my time must be up soon!! Poor DP is getting rather desperate!!! I had no idea it went on for that long. How niave am I? I'm glad I asked otherwise I would of been really miffed in a few weeks time! Oh well,off to buy more sanitary towels now then!

About 9 weeks here, although the last few weeks it was very light. It's making up for 9 months without periods you know!

Just wondered if anyone could help me with this again! I am still bleeding, varying amounts, some days it seems like it is going to stop soon, then restarts. I has been going a bit redder again at times too. The reason I am worried is because I have just passed a blood clot about the size of a 20pence peice. Is this still normal? I gave birth five weeks ago.

afriad i was the same flossam carrie on like this till dd was about 8weeks and the last week it got heavier than the first - if you are worried could you see the GP?

Hi Flossam. I bled for about 7 weeks after the birth - although no tears / stiches here. I also had a clot and mentioned it to the midwife / HV. I was told that as long it wasn't the size of a 50p I was fine. I've always been one for lumpy periods, so it didn't worry me. Hang on in there, adn enjoy the respite from dp!

Thank you both! Was just worried as it was a clot. But it was brown implying that it was old, so I will try and stop being a hypercondriac (sp!)!!
