How to thank a hospital team adequately?

I know a letter is probably the most important but our local hospital saved our baby with a category 1 c section and taking such fast action and I really want to do something to show them how we are forever grateful to them. Their compassion and care was amazing and I don’t even know many of their names as i went under so fast.
I don’t think there’s any suitable response big enough but does anyone in health care know how hospital teams can be thanked? Google says it can’t be valuable and it feels hard to know how to show our deepest deepest gratitude.

A donation to the hospital charity?

Dyra · 17/04/2022 23:11

A letter is always amazing to receive. Really helps with re-validation. As long as your name is on there, even if you can't remember any names, the staff involved with your care can be traced back through our records.

Otherwise, donations are a lovely gesture. And gifts of sweets and biscuits are always enjoyed. But honestly, a letter of thanks is appreciated far and away the most.

Letter and email, depending on where you are a post on careopinion?

DarkDarkNight · 17/04/2022 23:26

I think a heartfelt card for the staff room, and also an email to the Chief Exec to highlight the care you received.

Having previously worked in the NHS the staff room is never short of chocolates and biscuits so how about a little hamper with some nice teas, coffee and hot chocolate maybe some flavoured syrups?

Donations at our Trust went into a central fund so if this is the same it may not go to the department directly.

Clicky pens, black ink 👍

A heart felt letter does more than you know for teams. My obs and gyne pals have them stuck up around their desks/ team area as it reminds them why they do what they do.

If you do want to get something, and this Will seem random but nice teas/ snacks and some cutlery! They never ever have enough tea spoons/ cutlery to make tea and eat etc and so that would go down in history as an epic present.

We sent a personalised card with a picture of our baby on which I thought was probably about right. I've heard they also like nice comments with people named as they can go in to performance reviews.

My DH works in A&E and he has been carrying around a card he got from a child and their parents thanking him for the great treatment she received a few weeks ago. He is really treasuring it. Doesn't happen very often!

His team have also really appreciated takeaways delivered but that might be harder! One man used to order a takeaway on a Saturday night every few weeks as the dept saved his wife's life!

Heresafe · 17/04/2022 23:57

This is just lovely to hear these ideas as for example I’d have never known about need for nice cutlery. And I will try and find out some full names too as people stood out in how amazing they were to us. Thank you all very much and I love the man with the takeaways , that sounds so nice. Lots of brilliant ideas and I will make good use of them , thank you

Letters are always good. As nurses we have to revalidate to prove that we are fit to practice every three years. We have to collect proof that we are good enough at our jobs to continue. So anything that mentions staff by name would be really gratefully received.

doggiescats · 21/04/2022 22:06

I went to our local farm shop and had a hamper made up for the staff room . Teas, coffees, cordials, biscuits, brownies, savoury biscuits, cheese, fruit.
pit was very well received and put in a personalised card thanking the whole team .

Abcdefu · 21/04/2022 22:09

Cuterly, cups and glasses. Tea,coffee, hot chocolate and dilute - covers everyone and some sweets for good measures ! Also a thank-you card / letter is great for cpd

Apatosaurus20 · 21/04/2022 22:18

Ahh I’m so pleased reading these comments. I sent thank you cards to each department naming particular staff as I was so grateful for the care I received - I thought firstly they might just be thrown in the bin and secondly that I might come across as a bit over enthusiastic

FIZZYTEDDY · 02/05/2022 08:43

Amazing that you're thinking of giving back to them!

If you still have your hospital notes (I had mine home for the first week or so post CS for the community midwives) they will have a list of the staff in them so as to write a thank you card with their names in it, or your midwife might still have the notes. Almost all staff have to use performance feedback directly from patients in their portfolio/appraisals and I know how special and important name specific feedback is from patients! This is probably the best form of thank you.

A general donation to the hospital is kind but the specific staff you want to thank wouldnt really benefit.

Good ideas: Large box of good quality doughnuts from one of those fancy doughnut shops always a big hit!! A voucher addressed to the department you were in for your CS for a nearby cafe/lunch place/dominoes that does delivery to the hospital (delivery I key though), fancy/good quality tea and coffee, any treats from M&S really haha

I work in emergency theatres as a nurse and trust me - we all love to eat good treats!

FIZZYTEDDY · 02/05/2022 08:47

*delivery is key though - I meant to type. Staff can't leave the hospital on any of their breaks (even though they're not paid for them lol don't get me started 😤) but it's a pretty amazing treat getting a good delivery when you're on shift!!
