What to wear in labour

Hi I'm really unsure what to wear during labour, I can't find any button down nighties in primark and don't want to buy anything expensive as going to just throw it away. Would an extra long bagging strap top do?? I was going to take some nice pyjamas with a button up top for after labour?

Any other must haves i should make sure to pack clothes wise? I'm due next month.

I mean baggy strap top not bagging

I didn't have time to change for my first so gave birth in the top I was wearing anyway.

I wore a tankini top for my second as it was a water birth.

A lot of the time I was naked as well.

Beees · 01/04/2022 17:59

Baggy strappy top sounds perfect. I had a nighty but it didn't last long before I took it off.

bogoblin · 01/04/2022 17:59

I wore a giant t shirt (also couldn't find button up nightie!) and then ended up taking it off, then I puked in my bra and took that off as well! So ultimately nothing 😂

A top with straps sounds fine! I also loved big knickers after I gave birth - I actually still wear them!

Depends really!

First baby I gave birth in a loose PJ vest top and socks. After birth I got a shower and changed into a very short button-down nightie, disposable undies, sleep nursing bra, little PJ shorts for some modesty and flip flops. Went home the following day in the harem trousers I'd gone in wearing, more disposable undies, same nursing sleep bra, trainers, clean maternity T-Shirt. It was a heat wave in summer.

Second baby, gave birth in nursing sleep bra and vest top and socks that I'd gone in wearing. After birth I wasn't allowed to shower as was kept on a drip for hours and hours due to haemorrhage. I cleaned myself up as best as I could and changed into disposable undies, clean sleep nursing bra, clean socks, and a fairly short nightie. It wasnt button down but I just lifted it all the way up to feed and kept on the bed with sheets over me to cover up. It was autumn and fairly cold. I went home that same day so when it was time to go home I just put my slip on flat shoes back on, joggers that I was wearing when I went in back on under my nightie, jumper I was wearing when I went in on over my nightie and DH's coat on too as I hadn't got one with me, he wheeled me to the car.

2DogsOnMySofa · 01/04/2022 18:21

I had this all planned out, but dd had other ideas, I ended up in my dressing gown in an ambulance. I wouldn't bother putting too much thought into it, chances are it'll get blood, snot and fluids of all kind all over it and you won't give a shit what you look like, let alone what you're wearing

StrawberrySanta · 01/04/2022 18:23

First baby I changed into a hospital gown. Second I changed into a nightie (much more comfortable!!) I'd say nightie or baggy top

Beees · 01/04/2022 18:25

So pleased you mentioned wearing socks! Literally everyone I know who has had a baby discarded their socks before or during. It was the only item of clothing I was left wearing once the nighty was discarded.

Even the midwife commented it was very unusual to have someone still wearing them by the end let alone for someone to labour in just their socks. Grin

mrscotton · 01/04/2022 18:34

I gave birth in a black vest top as they could put baby onto my chest (didnt get much chance to change as was 9cm dilated by time i got to hospital), after birth changed into maternity pjs (nice & baggy as had stitches) and went home in maternity leggings, a different black vest top, hoody & slippers.

Loulou1712 · 01/04/2022 18:35

Hospital gown first time, naked second time 😂
Second labour by the time I was in active labour and the pool was ready I stripped off and couldn't have cared less 😂 x

I've never talked about it with anyone before tbh, I didn't realise it would be unusual! I was wearing socks when I went in both times and never thought to take them off as they never bothered me or anything! They've stayed on both times and never got dirty at all either haha!
Vapeyvapevape · 01/04/2022 20:00

I worn a baggy t shirt nightie , it ruckled up under my arms by the time I got to pushing though so might as well have been naked .

scrivette · 01/04/2022 20:02

Naked first time, a black maxi dress second time as I didn't have time to take it off and can't remember for third but I think it must have been a hospital gown as I had an emergency c section. I wore a hospital gown back to front for the next couple of days as I course face wearing leggings, wearing it back to front meant I could feed easily. Not exactly the height of fashion!

Beees · 01/04/2022 20:09

Apparently unusual enough for her to comment. Grin To be honest I was the same as you, it literally never occurred to me to take them off. Blush They were also completely spotless by the end of it and I only took them off once I went for a shower, although I almost didn't DH had to remind me before I got in to take them off. Grin

Riggles78 · 01/04/2022 20:11

I got a cheap black nightie and thin cotton dressing gown set from boohoo. Kept me at a good temperature and easy to pull up/down as needed!

PollysPockets · 01/04/2022 20:12

I took 4 button down nighties but ended up vomiting over 3 of them during labour (the pain made me sick) so actually gave birth in a hospital gown and then had one clean nightie to change into after birth.
To be honest wear whatever your comfortable in but it’s nice to be able to put baby straight on to your chest after birth but you can do that whatever you wear really

BakewellGin1 · 01/04/2022 20:14

I wore long Tshirt type nightie I got a pack of 2 from Asda..
Took baggy pj's for afterwards

Favourodds · 01/04/2022 20:18

A strappy yoga bra thing. Nothing else. I think there does come a point where you really couldn't care less so I wouldn't worry too much.

PrincessesRUs · 01/04/2022 20:23

Tankini top - would have hated being naked (was in a pool both times)

AllTheOtherNamesWereTaken · 01/04/2022 20:23

I wore a nice new nightie from Primark, but it was high at the neck and I wasn't able to pull it up to do skin to skin when I was handed my baby (was being stitched up on my back in stirrups!). So I'd wear a vest or button one next time, but he BF without any problems and I don't think we missed out on any bond

Babdoc · 01/04/2022 20:24

Hospital gown both times. Didn’t want blood and amniotic fluid all over my own clothes.
Plus I don’t own any nighties.

Standardmess · 01/04/2022 20:25

If you have a big tesco near you they have a blue and white stripe lightweight cotton button down nightie for about £12 I think. I bought it recently for my second labour as I remembered how horribly hot the ward was last time. Ended up being naked during but it was nice to put on afterwards.

In my hospital bag, I packed comfy maternity clothes to come home in, fluffy socks to sleep in, disposable pants, maternity pads, flip flops for the shower room and a couple of sweet snacks but mostly savoury and a big water bottle.

bm2021 · 01/04/2022 20:29

Honestly you won’t give a teeny tiny toss what you’re wearing so just whatever’s comfy! I went in for checks 3 weeks early and ended up being kept in & having him that day.. couldn’t even tell you what I had on but I could’ve been wearing nipple tassels alone and I wouldn’t have cared 🤣

ineedafairygodmother · 01/04/2022 20:54

I bought a XXL mens T-shirt from primark (usually a M so XXL was nice and baggy) but ended up giving birth in strappy vest top as T-shirt was too hot so it came off and vest top was underneath, it was January! Showered after birth, changed into baggy PJ's, went home same day so just threw hoody on over PJ top,

Fifthtimelucky · 01/04/2022 22:37

First time: One of my husband's old T shirts. He's a foot taller then I am and quite broad so it was very long and baggy on me.

Second time: started off the same but then naked to get into water pool.

Why are you planning to throw away what you wear?
