How did you avoid constipation after c section?

I had a c section yesterday morning, and am already nervous about my first poo. I haven't been since the day before and I'm usually every day regular, but I don't have the muscle strength to even try to pass gas, never mind poo Sad
If you managed to avoid constipation, how? I had a little lactulose last night and today, eaten light and had mainly fruit. Any other ideas?

Lactulose and prune juice 2 x per day worked for me.
I had such bad constipation with my first baby (non c section) that I was determined not to let that happen again!

Prune juice and a stool under your feet to raise your knees. Relax and only go when it’s time! Plus I did the ‘moo’ breathing which I’d practiced for giving birth and then didn’t need…more relaxing into the poo and less pushing it out!

Lots of water and lots of fibrogel. Good luck!

I managed and it wasn't bad!! (Sorry for the weird poo update, DP isn't sharing in my excitement!)

I upped the lactulose (maybe a bit too much, I'm sure it's meant to take 48 hours to work!) and ate a bunch of dried apricots, couldn't NOT go when I woke up Grin

I'm afraid it was dreadful for me, the nurses weren't concerned at all that i hadn't been for about four days and said if i was still worried and couldn't go they could give me an enema if i wanted.
(Was in hospital for nearly 10 days.)
I did go eventually , without the enema, but it was horrendous. I will spare you the details.

I think the nurse gave me lactulose. Any way it wasn't a problem

TheYearOfSmallThings · 27/01/2022 08:19

Bravo OP - now you can relax and enjoy your lovely baby!

BabyInTheJungle · 27/01/2022 08:19

That's good OP.

What I will say (sorry) is that my first go was fine. It just all hit the fan after that and the difficulties went on a for about 4 weeks.

Fingers crossed you don't have the same experience but if I were you I'd carry on with bowel friendly food and a maintenance dose of lactulose for another week or so.

Peppermint tea is good. I heard a doctor recommended it to someone having this issue.

I never had issues with it. I think like you I was a few days late but I took the laxative they gave me every day and it wasn’t a painful issue.

BabyInTheJungle · 27/01/2022 08:22

Peppermint is a godsend but can also affect milk supply. A few cups of tea is good but I'd not take the strong capsules of peppermint until feeding is well established.

My poo was pretty loose for a few days after my section. Didn't need a laxative.

Loads of dried apricots sorted me out!
