Please tell me your VBAC story, what was it like? were you worried about your scar? How supportive were the midwives? Did you manage it? Was it a positive experience? Tell me everything!

I had my son in 2014, had to have a section under general anaesthetic which was awful and put me off trying for another baby for a long time!

Had daughter in July 2020. I was adamant I didn’t want another c section, fortunately second pregnancy was very straightforward so consultant was happy for me to try for a VBAC. I did have a few concerns regarding the scar but read these sort of complications are fairy rare.

Went into labour at 38+5, thought it was a water infection when I arrived at hospital but was actually 4cm. Had to have my waters broken (this was the same as previous pregnancy) and then gave birth around three hours later. Had a small tear.

The midwife was so supportive, she had actually had a VBAC herself and was so encouraging she really understood.

I’m so pleased I went for the VBAC, I found the recovery so much better than my section. However, my son was in NICU for two weeks and quite ill so it was a completely different situation.

Also, my sister has had three sections (two planned) and I was with her for two of them, they seemed very relaxed so my view may be coloured by the fact my section was under such distressing circumstances.

Hope this helps!

I had a perfect VBAC for my second child, the first was an emergency section as my son's head was tilted, back to back and couldn't dilate past 8.5cm after 2 days in labour.

I woke up at 3.30am on her due date, I used hypnobirth techniques all day as I got my eldest ready to go to childcare. Attended hospital at 7.30pm, was in the pool most of the evening with some gas and air. I got out to squat as she was a little bit stuck (just like my son) and I really belive the midwife was the reason I delivered naturally. Had her at 11.50pm the same day, no stitches or injuries at all. I was very very clear I wanted minimal intervention and to be monitored with the mobile device. I was active most of the day and was 7cm by the time I got to the ward. I insisted I was midwife led, not consultant (but both wards next to each other just in case).

No regrets, far better recovery and I was home by lunchtime the day after.

Thank you for all your responses - really appreciate it!

I had an emergency c-section because it turns out my baby was breach and they only realised when I was 6cm dilated. The c-section itself went well but I found the recovery physically and mentally really difficult so I really don't want to go through that again. I thought a VBAC would be simple enough buy have just started reading about the scar issues and how you can't be chemically induced. I feel more anxious than the first time round just with all the worries of what if there are complications. I'm also worried about ending up having to have a section and then have to look after a toddler and a newborn....

I think you have to be open to all possibilities and that some things may be out of your control.

I had a crash section with my first (and subsequent PND and PTSD).

I was adamant that I had to have a vbac for my second. I had lots of support for it from the midwife, my consultant and the therapist I was seeing. Nobody could see any reason that a vbac would not be successful.

However, when the time came things didn't go to plan and I needed an emergency section (this time without GA). But it was ok - this time I had prepared myself that it may be a possibility and I felt so much more in control.

Here's my story, I had a vbac for my 3rd child
At 38+ 6 days i woke up to my waters breaking. So i got up, got ready, rang the hospital, waited a bit, lost my mucus plug, took my kids to the neighbours and finally headed into hospital with my husband at around 7 am. I was already having painless contractions by this stage, every 3 to 4 minutes, but they would stop or slow down when I'd lie or sat down. At the hospital, i went into triage and they sent my husband away due to covid restrictions and said he'd be allowed back once I'd be in active labour, which means when I'd be 4 cm dilated. At this point, I was put on a monitor but they wouldn't examine me to see how dilated I was. At around 10 am, I was finally admitted to the ward but still not examined. My contractions were still quite irregular and not so painful. I started feeling them in the back as well as in the front. I decided to just relax and watch some netflix, eat a little bit and just wait for them to become more regular. I was examined at 2.30 and told I was only 3cm, so my husband still couldn't come join me. So more waiting around, netflix and relaxing. At 5, my contractions were getting painful and I decided to put on my tens machine with the help of a midwife. I asked the midwife for my husband and she told me they were negotiating to take me down to the delivery suite and he'd be able to come then. I asked her to examine me at 5.30 and she said I was 4 to 5 cm. So called my husband and told him to come. The contractions were very strong and painful, I was struggling to just breathe through them and decided I wanted an epidural because I couldn't see how I would be able to carry on if I was just only entering the active labour stage. I called the midwife and told her I needed pain relief. She told me there was no pain relief on the ward i was on but she would take me now to the delivery suite. She said she would insert the canular to prepare for the epidural while we waited for confirmation i could go to the delivery suite. She started fiddling with my hand as I was standing by the end of the bed, and there was no nearly no gaps between my contractions by this stage. I started moaning and shouting in pain with each contractions. I could feel the baby descending! In fact, I started shouting involuntary and my body took over from there. It was starting to push. The midwife quickly went to get a wheelchair and told me to sit on it. I told her I couldn't, my body was too rigid. She insisted, I managed to get on the wheelchair and she was running in the corridors pushing me on the wheelchair, as I was shouting and my body pushing the baby down the birth canal. It was like an out of body experience. I was so relieved when I realised that my baby was coming, because I understood it was all nearly over. When the midwife got me to the delivery suite, the head was crowing. I didnt hurt, it was nothing compared to the contraction pains. When I felt the crowning, I was happy as I knew it was all nearly over. . I managed to get up from the wheelchair, and got on all fours on the bed. They took my leggings and underwear off, and as we were waiting for the next contraction to deliver the rest of the body, my husband arrived! He couldn't believe what was happening, as it all happened so fast. Baby girl was born at 6.09 pm. On my notes, the first stage was recorded as 48 minutes and second stage was 3 minutes. I cant believe I did it with just a tens machine. My plan was to go with an open mind and see. I lost a teaspoon of blood and needed 2 stitches. Our bodies are amazing things 💪 💪💕

@Solven Amazing story this gives me hope. Can I ask were you early on either or both of your first two pregnancies ? Also did you have a vaginal birth on either of your first 2 or was it 2 c sections ? I had a vaginal (forceps) on 1st after induction at 38w and an ELCS at 39+ 3 on my second so I know my chances of VBAC are good as I’ve had a VB before . But still terrified as it was a traumatic VB.

Pinkflamingofly · 19/01/2022 13:17

@SaraKitty first baby came at 37+3 and second came at 38+6 (like the third). My first was also a forceps delivery, and my second a csection because he was breech. I'm so happy I had a vbac with my third, the recovery was amazing. I was home 4 hours after the birth, and back on the school run just a few days later. What helped was baby being in the best position she could be ( I exercised daily on my crosstrainer until I was 37 weeks) and no interventions. I was on my own, had no idea of my progress, all I had to do was rest, eat and watch Netflix. So I think my body was completely relaxed despite being in hospital. I am gutted my husband only got to come at the very end, but still happy with my experience
