Painkillers after section, what did they give you?

I'm due my second section in 5/6 weeks. Last time I was given diclofenac in hospital and when out my husband was able to buy it as Voltatarol over the counter. But seems the tablet form has been discontinued? I can't take codeine based painkillers as already struggle with constipation. What were you given?

Paracetamol and I can't take Ibruprofen

wingingit33 · 16/01/2022 16:53

Paracetamol alone doesn't seem like it will cut it!!

Paracetamol after my section too

Peoplearetwats · 16/01/2022 16:55

I was given tramadol in hospital and paracetamol ibuprofen to take home

mynameiscalypso · 16/01/2022 16:55

I had codeine and morphine in hospital. I was discharged with paracetamol and thought I'd need more but actually it was fine.

Paracetamol alone doesn't seem like it will cut it!!
It doesn't tbh. They offered Ibruprofen to others too. But Im not allowed it.
amimollycoddling · 16/01/2022 16:55

Following this with interest, I am having similar thoughts. I had agonising constipation with my first section and do not want to go through that again.

And paracetamol reeeeeeeally won't cut it!!

Bagelsandbrie · 16/01/2022 16:55

There are lots of painkillers you can take - but almost all of them will contribute towards constipation. You are best to take the painkiller and take laxido as well or some sort of laxative to counteract the effects. I had Cocodamol 30/500 after my section and then Tramadol and paracetamol at night. (I found the Tramadol better at helping me to sleep).

Paracetamol and diclofenac last time, but I was given the diclofenac to bring home I didn't need to get it myself. I was told to ask for something stronger if I needed it, but I didn't. Then after a week or so swapped the diclofenac for ibuprofen.

Dougt · 16/01/2022 16:59

I was discharged with enough of the stronger ones so so didn’t need to buy any. I had codeine, ibuprofen and paracetamol. Hopefully they should be able prescribe enough diclofenac for you to take home, or ask for it on prescription.

littledinokitty · 16/01/2022 17:03

I was discharged with 10 days worth of dihydracodeine and told to also take paracetamol and ibuprofen. I was also given a bottle of lactulose to take for 10 days.

KiloWhat · 16/01/2022 17:04

Well jealous! Paracetamol is not enough

Ftumch · 16/01/2022 17:06

Paracetamol and ibuprofen and oramorph in hospital, I wasn't sent home with anything, but told to take paracetamol and ibuprofen at home.

Inastatus · 16/01/2022 17:08

Morphine is hospital but just paracetamol to take at home.

Inastatus · 16/01/2022 17:09

In not is!

Sassenach85 · 16/01/2022 17:09

Morphine and diclofenac after my section. Paracetamol and ibuprofen after my vaginal birth. Which btw was the worst. Hellish. Months to heal!

GAW19 · 16/01/2022 17:09

Paracetamol with both of mine.
They will advise taking paracetamol and ibuprofen 2 hours between each other.
It does work, just make sure you are on time with meds, do not forget!

123feraverto · 16/01/2022 17:11

Not c section but I had my gallbladder out while I was breastfeeding my 4 month old

They discharged me with tramadol if I needed it - can't breastfeed with it.

I managed with paracetamol and ibuprofen

SweepTheHalls · 16/01/2022 17:14

Oramorph both in hospital and at home.

Bocial · 16/01/2022 17:14

Morphine in hospital and sent home less than a day later with paracetamol and ibuprofen and a laxative.

I struggled with the pain this time so I called the gp and they gave me diclofenac and dihydracodine. Very thankful for my angel GP!

Garman · 16/01/2022 17:16

Difene and paracetamol

wingingit33 · 16/01/2022 17:16

Oh good so diclofenac still exists form the docs! Great! I thought it had been discontinued. I'll be asking for that!

Paracetamol

absolutely ridiculous. I had to keep pestering them for stronger stuff as i was in agony.

got the odd bit of oramorph after begging.

stole my husbands tramadol for a few days when i got home.

awful.

Keep on at them OP, if you need stronger keep asking. Paracetamol is fine for some people but I was really struggling and if I ever have a 3rd il be more willing to speak out about it.

tokyo1 · 16/01/2022 17:20

Dihydrocodiene which I really needed for the first 4 days. Then paracetamol and ibuprofen.

Iliketeaagain · 16/01/2022 17:21

I found paracetamol did work after I was discharged. Was given morphine the first night, then was sore, but paracetamol and ibuprofen worked - but the trick is to take them by the clock rather than waiting until you are in pain. I had alarms set on my phone to take them. That way you get on top of your pain rather than waiting until it wears off. And as others have said, some pre-emptive gentle laxative to prevent constipation!

I did that for about 2 weeks then stopped, took some in the morning and before bed for a few days after that.

Didn't want any codeine as constipation pain was way worse after my 1st c-section than the surgical pain!
