Will my child be English or Welsh on paperwork?

Just curious to see if anyone knows! Grin I keep forgetting to ask the community midwife. I live near the border between England and Wales on the Welsh side - so baby will be born in closest hospital which is in England, but name etc registered in nearest registry office which is in Wales. It doesn't matter to me but someone asked whether he'd be considered English or Welsh and I said I'd got no idea!

Michael Owen was born in Chester but lived in Wales (I think) and played for England.

I was born in Chester and have lived in Wales all my life- I’m English (as family were all born in England) but I can easily call myself Welsh too. My baby will be born in Wales but we’re all “English” so they’ll get the choice I guess

Thank you for the replies Flowers . Yes, I suppose he can chose for himself whether he considers himself English or Welsh - he'll have English parents and be born in England but will live in Wales from almost day 1 (as soon as we're let out of hospital!) and will learn Welsh in school.

I was just curious about what all the paperwork might say, but I suspect it will just say "British". My family did say I should have gone for a Welsh hospital instead, in case that meant he was more eligible to play rugby for Wales! (English family but massive Welsh rugby fans Wink).

Yes, most just say "British". You can self-select Welsh on a lot of paper forms though. I've found the Welsh to be very 'nationalist' and proud of their Welsh status!

Baby can play for either. My nephew was born in England, to English parents, has lived in Wales since 5 years old and plays sport internationally for Wales :)

Thank you all Smile - good to know. At least I've got more of an answer if any more family ask!

I was born over the border but played hockey for North Wales as a kid. I always tell people I'm Welsh, as it's not my fault its a medical desert!

My husband grew up 2 miles away from the Welsh border and went to school in the nearest town, which was over the border in Wales. He's never considered himself as being Welsh though!
