NHS hospital policies after a C-section

Hello!

I'm having an elective C-section and I'm wondering about a few things.
1.) if all is well, will my baby sleep next to me in hospital (in her crib of course) ? As in - will they not take her away?
2.) this is not specific for a C-section, but is baby's first blanket the one I take in to hospital?
3.) I was encouraged to pump if my milk is a bit late coming in. Should I take in my own pump or just use the hospital's?

Thanks so much. I know they're pretty silly questions but I'd still love to know.

Hi! I had a EMCS two weeks ago and my baby was placed in a crib next to me. Every time i needed something at night I buzzed the midwives. Eventually I just put her in bed with me and made sure everything was in arms reach ie nappies and milk bottles. I took two blankets but the hospital also gave me some to use. They won’t expect you to use a pump first they’ll prob make you hand expressing into syringes . Good luck!

I've never heard of a baby being taken from anyone as standard who has just had a CS and no other issues.

You can take your own blankets in, if you don't have any I'm sure they will provide some

Your milk will take approximately 3 days to come in (some people report it being a little longer after having a CS but in my experience it's still usually 3 days). Before that you will produce colostrum, it isn't usually that effective to use a pump while you are producing colostrum as it comes in very small quantities, but if needed hopefully you would have a good midwife on hand who could help you hand express some, which you could feed to baby via a syringe or spoon.

Hope all goes wellSmile

No we don't take babies away unless you ask

We will supply blankets

No pumps unless you're in for a while, just hand expressing into a syringe @tudorqueenie

You might struggle to pick up the baby after a c section so call the midwives / hca to help you

They keep the baby with you. I didn’t hold mine for long immediate after as I went to sleep, emcs after a long labour. They dressed him in first outfit which I had put in a labelled zip lock bag in the top of the hospital bag. The hospital pumps are brilliant
Second time I had a VBAC and was knackered and didn’t want to hold the baby, that did worry the midwives as I think as much as an hour passed before I held her. They cleaned her up dressed her and passed her to dh

Your baby will be next to you but because of the spinal you'll have to buzz for the midwife every time you want your baby passing to you.

We used their blanket but you can use your own but she was quite mucky.

I'd take your own as backup but the hospital does have them

Thank you so so much everyone, this has been incredibly helpful! I really appreciate it.

Just to note that milk can take 3-5 days to come in, before then your body will be producing colostrum in the small amounts baby needs for its small stomach, but its very fatty and calorie dense so small amounts often are all baby needs for its marble sized stomach in the early days. This isn't an indication that you need to pump.

Thank you! I only mentioned the pump because my midwife said today that we are going to use that to stimulate my breasts. I was a bit surprised!

I've had two C-sections and never used a pump. The main thing that kickstarts milk production is the placenta detaching. Labour hormones do play a part, so it can sometimes be slower after a C-section but baby on boob as frequently as possible is likely going to be more effective than a pump!

Vampiricouncil · 11/12/2021 09:46

2 sections here too.
Baby next to me but hard to lift so had him with me.
Didn’t pump, straight on the breast.
I was home in about 20 hours after the operation to be honest so didn’t take masses of stuff in with me,
just a couple of baby grows, nappies and a warm blanket for the car seat going home.

I've had 2 sections one emcs, one planned that ended up also emcs.

Baby was always next to me, first born was taken away to neonatal for some treatment and antibiotics but was always brought bk to me.

No one mentioned about buzzing the nurses to get the baby when I was in hospital. I felt like it was very much up to me very little support. I just used to get her myself while in absolute agony. Let's be honest Ul be waiting a long time on them coming while baby is screaming the place down.

No one told me how to get myself off the bed, well they did on day 3 or 4 🙈 You need to roll on to your side and push yourself up with ur hands rather than just sitting up like normal and using the muscles.

With my first born I was in hospital 6 days and 5 nights and breastfed. A pump was never mentioned. My milk never came in at all. So we had already started top ups before we left hospital. With second baby it came in around day 5. Which was a def shock, my goodness your boobs just balloon 😂

Second time around I went home next day very late about 8pm I was desperate to go home especially with having another child at home. They wanted me to stay and I ended up going home with a catheter in. Long story short they didn't get me on my feet until about 10hrs after my section (despite me asking). I cldnt get anything out first time around so they kept giving me jugs of water and told me I HAD to drink it. If u want home I'm need to pee. It ended up over stretching my bladder and I still didn't manage to go. The doctor was appalled with the midwives as I also had to go back for a bladder scan to check they hadn't damaged my bladder, so be careful with that. First time around though I was fine doing a pee after just make sure they get you up and about reasonably quick.

Thank you so much for sharing your experiences! That's good to know - sounds like there is not much use for the pump when in hospital, I'm a bit confused by my midwife then haha!
