Induction?

39+6 weeks.

Was at the hospital with reduced movements. 4th time over the last 3 months.

As soon as I was put on the monitor the baby started kicking & didn't stop all night!

As it was the 4th time of reduced movements the Dr has offered a sweep and a balloon induction.

Baby has been scanned as well as being on the monitor and the blood flow through the cord has been checked and all is fine.

Would you go for sweep & induction or wait to labour naturally?

Had the Doctor explained the risks I of having the induction and the risks of not having it?

kensington09 · 28/11/2021 16:54

@PanicBuyingSprouts she explained that they offer induction as when a baby is stillborn the mother often recalls reduced movements beforehand so they offer to everyone even though in most cases the induction would be unnecessary.

If the baby is fine I would wait and try for a natural labour.

PanicBuyingSprouts · 28/11/2021 18:05

So what they're saying is there is a chance of having a stillborn? I know that inductions can lead to complications and interventions but you'd have to weigh up the risk of those against the very small change of losing your baby.

Perhaps talk to your MW tomorrow about your concerns and feelings Thanks

kensington09 · 28/11/2021 18:13

@Aquamarine1029 yes that was my initial thoughts, as if I haven't yet gone into labour naturally it would mean my body isn't ready, and so the induction could be a long drawn out process that could end in EMCS.

I asked would the preferred method be induction over elective CS and she said yes, although it would be my right to have the CS if that's the route I wanted to take.

I would prefer to go into labour naturally but at the same time don't want to do anything that puts the baby at risk

@PanicBuyingSprouts she says there is nothing to indicate this would end in a stillbirth, but as they don't know what causes it they prefer to offer inductions to all women just incase it did happen.

At the moment I'm still feeling movements so that reassures me the baby is ok.

It's just hard to know what to do for the best.

I think it's a good idea to call the midwife tomorrow and have a chat with her too. Thank you

@kensington09 Could you have the sweep and see how that goes? They'll be able to examine you at the same time and tell you how favourable your cervix is. If it is fairly favourable I'd be tempted to go with induction.

PanicBuyingSprouts · 28/11/2021 20:25

That's a good suggestion Banana.

Think I'd be drinking lots of Raspberry Leaf tea at this point too @kensington09 Smile

kensington09 · 28/11/2021 21:16

@Bananapancakes6 as daft as it sounds the sweeps really worry me. They say there uncomfortable but I find the examinations painful and it stresses me out. If the dr advises it's the best thing to do for the safety of the baby then I will of course do it but otherwise I don't know if the stress of it will counteract setting labour off.

I know it is silly when I'm about to give birth and be in a lot more pain!

Also, I've read that it can cause infections and will do no good if cervix is not favourable.

If anything changes, eg any more reduced movements then I think that will be the route I'm taking though

@PanicBuyingSprouts I haven't tired the raspberry tea, but I will give that a go too. I'm currently bouncing on the ball as we speak!

I drank loads of RLT. At the birth the MW asked me if I'd been drinking for abs said she could tell. DD was here in less than 5 hours from start to finish.

I did have to put honey in it though to make it more palatable Smile

@PanicBuyingSprouts that sounds good! I'll be picking some up in the morning I think!

Sweeps are uncomfortable but not painful. I’d have one and see how favourable your cervix is.
