Avoiding sickness after pain relief during labour

With all my previous pregnancies I’ve vomited very soon after giving birth, once during labour.
I don’t like being sick(who does?!) and would like to avoid it if possible.
In the past I’ve had pethadine and gas and air. I’d like to avoid an epidural as I’d like to be up and about as soon as possible after birth and get home if I can.
Any tips on how to maybe prevent this?

Ask for it to be added into your birthing plan to be given something to stop you vom. I am an emetaphobe (vom phobia) and was told you could could this.
Whilst I was in recovery from my c section I bought it up (no pun intented) and the midwife gave me an injection, no vom, such a relief.

Could you manage without pain relief? If you had coaching, eg hypnotherapy, yoga techniques etc?

I definitely had anti sickness injection in both labours as I was vomiting constantly.
In my second one it was included as standard with diamorphine!

I was sick in labour before I had any pain relief, it may not be the drugs that are making you poorly. For me it was the pain.

With my first csection I had anti sickness like a dissolvable tablet on the tongue
Worked a treat

Yes you can definitely have antiemetics (antisickness meds) and it can be caused by the hormones in labour/the pain. I vomited through my labour until I got antiemetics. As pp said it is usually given as standard alongside pethidine.

Also an epidural shouldn't prevent you having a quick discharge home, it's usually worn off by an hour or so after delivery!

With my second I puked the whole pregnancy in labour I mentioned it and the gave me an anti emetic really quick. I would just mention it they will probably give you an injection quickly as see it as one less thing for you to have to worry about

I’m an(almost ex) emetaphobe. I’ve had ant-emetics with all labours but don’t seem to work. Will be asking for it to go in with any pain relief I opt for. I preferred pethadine to diamorphine. The gas and air made me feel sick anyway so I might avoid that altogether this time.
I’d love to say I’ll try and go without pain relief, but I’d be lying my ass off! 😂

I have emetophobia so went without meds, I don't regret it.

I went without pain relief. Not really a plan as such but the gas and air made me sick the first time around. It was an amazing experience to be honest. I felt waves of natural chemicals hitting in after each contraction. I was high as a kite! Have a read of "birth skills" by JoJo Sundin and see what you think.

Thanks @SummerHouse just ordered a copy. Can’t hurt can it-pardon the pun!
