Horseshoe kidney

Hi all, I’m currently 36weeks pregnant, I had to be referred for a growth scan at my last midwife appt due to baby had dropped off 50th percentile. At the growth scan they confirmed baby was measuring small and on 10th percentile, however they also noticed the right kidney was located further down towards pelvis and malrotated, I went back for a follow up scan with the consultant who confirmed only 1 kidney was fully functioning and other was in wrong position and not functioning. He called it a horseshoe kidney. They didn’t seem overly concerned as you can live with just one kidney and they say baby will just be referred to paeds team when he’s born, we Came home and made the mistake of googling it. And are even more worried. Has anyone else’s baby had similar issues? has it affected them once they’re born etc.

Hello

I have also been told the same for my baby.
did it cause any concerns for your baby or pregnancy?

I hope all is well
thank you x

My friend's daughter has this. She's six and has regular appointments (yearly, I think) to keep an eye on it but has never had any related issues. I think she's more at risk of UTIs but like I say, nothing so far.

The only real problem is that my friend is a bit of a wreck in the days leading up to the check ups 😥Her daughter is not bothered!

Oh sorry, didn't realise it was an old thread.

Hello
thank you for your reply.
I am worried as it seems rare but it’s nice to know your friends daughter is fine.
thank you x

May be kabuki syndrome.

SCgreenwood · 04/02/2024 06:51

Are you a doctor ?

Glasgowmix · 04/02/2024 22:25

No. I’m sorry if I’ve worried you. I have a family member with the condition and that was noticed in the scan. It’s very very rare. Wishing you all the best. Apologies again if I’ve concerned you unnecessarily.

Hi there, I appreciate that this is an old post but I have had the exact same situation at routine growth scan in third trimester, an unexpected finding of bilateral pelvic kidneys on my baby girl that are likely to be a horseshoe kidney. How did this turn out for you?
