Induction. I've been admitted but now I have to wait until TUESDAY

I was admitted to hospital today to be induced via balloon induction at 41 weeks. Was told to get here at 10, they put the balloon in at 3pm and it fell out on its own at 4pm after some contractions.

The next stage is to pop my waters but they are saying they may not have time to do this until Tuesday because they are so busy! It is Saturday night and I'm supposed to stay here waiting until then. I've just had a big cry, I have a 3yo at home missing his mummy and I am just sitting around waiting here, it feels like such a waste of time.

I could discharge myself, but worry about getting back to hospital if I do go into labour (my first was fast) but the thought of sitting around waiting all that time is so awful.

Are there any concerns about baby or is it just being overdue as the reason for induction? Could you ask to go home but ring in each day to see if they can fit you in?

WakeUpLockie · 13/11/2021 17:36

Oh my god you poor thing! I hate that feeling. Ugh. I would go home personally, a 3+ day wait in hospital sounds like hell and is unacceptable. How can they not have time to pop waters in all that time.

ThirdElephant · 13/11/2021 17:37

I'd go home if it were me.

MarshaBradyo · 13/11/2021 17:39

Go home?

I had three nights in hospital waiting for induction as labour ward was full

I told people it felt like purgatory

sociallydistained · 13/11/2021 17:39

💯 go home. If they were worried about your baby at all it would be handled before Tuesday!

Bananapancakes6 · 13/11/2021 17:39

My baby has a mild cardiac anomaly, hence the induction, but we have been waiting 3 days to be called in for this because they said he might need a nicu bed. They're now saying he isn't nicu dependant so doesn't get priority in the popping waters queue.

I honestly don't know what to do.

Go home. They are clearly not worried about you; no way would I sit in hospital waiting for three days. Go and see your three year old.

Daisy4569 · 13/11/2021 17:44

May not have time? Can you ask them how likely it is you will have to wait that long? If it’s a definite I’d go home as long as you feel comfortable, if it’s just a possibility id stay to keep my place in the queue!

JustKeepSw1mming · 13/11/2021 17:46

I went home - I had 1 night in the hospital and it was so noisy so I got no sleep. I don't think your place in the queue depends on you being there?

Curioushorse · 13/11/2021 17:46

This happened to me. It's because it's the weekend. I'm sending sympathy, and memories of those tears. But also just to let you know you won't remember. When you've got your baby, you really won't care. And you obviously can't go home because your baby needs monitoring. Good luck! And sympathy!

P.s. I went into labour naturally and had my baby on the Monday.

Bananapancakes6 · 13/11/2021 17:48

I'm going to ask another midwife and say I am considering discharging myself. All this waiting has already made me super anxious. I think I'll lose the plot sitting here for 3 days waiting.

Yes ask

I only stayed as they just said wait rather than we’ll do it Tuesday

I had young dc at gps longer than they should have been and missing me

PatchworkElmer · 13/11/2021 17:57

Go home.

KateTheEighth · 13/11/2021 18:01

Go home if you can.

You won't sleep well in hospital and you need all the sleep you can get.

Stressing and getting anxious (all completely understandable) will not help a good outcome for your induction.

Good luck Smile

Doubleraspberry · 13/11/2021 18:04

Yes, absolutely go home. As @KateTheEighth says, you won’t get much sleep and the last thing you need is to go through labour worn out.

Theunamedcat · 13/11/2021 18:09

Talk to them my induction was the same they ran out of beds and/or midwives so I was stuck there like a lemon for days the one midwife was so concerned she rang her colleague in another hospital found out they had room and many midwives and suggested I go there she couldn't officially transfer me as the Dr wanted me to stay but she said I could leave all I had to do was ask her to prep the paperwork

I asked her to prep the paperwork

Sexnotgender · 13/11/2021 18:10

That’s rubbish. I’d definitely be going home if there’s no risk to you or baby.

Ozanj · 13/11/2021 18:33

It can take up to 5 days for an Induction to work. Were you not told this? I think you should stay. Inductions can make labour progress very quickly even after the balloon so you def want to be close to medical professionals

Borderterrierpuppy · 13/11/2021 18:39

Go home, honestly you will be so tired by Tuesday you won’t be able to think straight. Go back when you labour or on Tuesday whichever is soonest:)

Bananapancakes6 · 13/11/2021 18:43

@Ozanj I understand this, but I have been left not contracting, not progressing and possibly going backwards (they said my cervix might close again) until I can get my waters popped. It's my second baby, with my first I had my waters popped and he came within 4h.

So their "plan" is to warehouse you like an inanimate object rather than treating you like a human being?

Sparklespangle · 13/11/2021 18:49

Could you ask for a sweep in the morning then go home and see if anything happens?

KateTheEighth · 13/11/2021 18:50

I'm absolutely sure that the sheer exhaustion and despair from my 3 day failed induction (-> em section) contributed massively to my PND

I hope you manage to get some rest

Bit different here though as @bananaoancakes6 first stage of induction has worked but she's being prevented from accessing the ARM she's ready for because of ?staff or ?space shortages which isn't her fault but is definitely her problem.

I'd go home @Bananapancakes6 you'll be knackered by Tues if you stay in, maybe hang on tonight just in case you get a fast one and your waters go and get you to jump the queue like mine did. I'm surprised they aren't more concerned about getting a baby with a cardiac issue out, I'd maybe be asking a few questions about why it's acceptable to delay you to that gestation with that problem hanging over you, could you ask to speak to the matron/midwife in charge?

RobinPenguins · 13/11/2021 18:56

Why on earth did they start you off if they don’t have the staff to see it through? I’m very risk averse but in this situation would absolutely be trying to go home.
