Queens Medical Centre or Nottingham City Hospital?

Hi Lovlies,

I haven’t been able to find any recent threads about the above hospital regarding giving birth.

1.	I’m looking to know which is best.

2.	I want to know whether both have en-suite bathrooms. If not, which one has en-suite and which has shared?

3.	Any options for a private room for partner if necessary at any or both?

Many thanks!

Just bumping for you. I really don't know which one is best Smile

Zay101 · 11/11/2021 06:47

I gave birth in City and unfortunately they had a shortage of midwives working that night which meant the following....

Was not allowed to have an epidural
Could not start induction
Labour lasted 36 hrs
Ended up being septic and rushed into emergency c section

I initially was at queens when my waters broke and they seemed to have no shortage or problems as such..... have also heard that queens is better but only after my experience.

Room wise at city... I had an en suite which was shared but there was no patient occupying the next room so had it to myself. The room was decent.

There was no separate room for partner...

I honestly think its down to luck... no one can predict how things are going to go. Best wishes

Private room for partner?!

Don’t mean to be rude but I doubt that’s normal on the NHS so maybe you should be looking at paying to go private?

CorrBlimeyGG · 11/11/2021 20:22

Where are you in Nottingham? Are you aware maternity services are in special measures? I'd go to King's Mill if it's a possibility.

SavoyCabbage · 11/11/2021 20:23

I agree that it sounds like you need to go private,

I gave birth at city and it was all good. I can’t remember the bathroom situation but I didn’t really care either.

My sister gave birth at city and there were no midwives available and the cleaner delivered the baby,

She laughs about it now.

Neither of our husbands were given a private room. Pretty sure line had his own chair though.

CorrBlimeyGG · 11/11/2021 20:24

At one point it was possible for partners to stay at the patient hotel at City. That is no longer the case.

Monkeyseesmonkeydoesn · 11/11/2021 20:26

City hospital for both my babies, both times brilliant. This was 5.5yrs ago and 1yr ago. City hospital is not my closest but QMC, to me, is so huge and impersonal

Yes, some NHS hospitals have facility. One has to pay for it if course Smile

Thanks, do you have experience giving birth at Kings Mill ?

Thanks, I'm aware of what's happening with these hospitals. However, I've read reviews online regarding Kings Mill and some of which have been pretty horrible. It's also a bit further from the others. As such, it's a very difficult decision. I have even thought about using a hospital out of town but I'm unclear how feasible that would be.

I've had both of mine at City. Unfortunately not straight forward enough to use the patient hotel. And no fancy facilities. I only got my own room after birth the first time as baby was in special care and second time as there was a disruptive family opposite me so moved me out of mercy.

Yes, some NHS hospitals have facility. One has to pay for it if course

Unless you are going privately (in a private wing attached to an NHS hospital) you cannot book a private room.

If one is available when you are there (ie there is no-one who actually needs it - infection control, baby died and can't humanely be near other newborns, baby in SCBU (ditto), other medical reasons, super-multiples) then they may be available on a first-come-first-served basis. And you can be asked to vacate if someibe comes in which significant need.

norbert23 · 14/11/2021 06:46

I had my first in city and second in QMC, staff were amazing in both and clearly cared. I was in the sanctuary in QMC which was very lovely and the staff were very supportive and I felt really nurtured. I think experiences vary though depending on how many people are also giving birth, I've been really lucky both times, especially in the sanctuary as there was only one other person in (the week before they'd been completely full). Parking is easier at city but if you're debating it they have virtual visits I think which might help you decide. Good luck! X

As stated above, some NHS hospitals have this facility.

These are called amenity rooms, and some hospitals with this facility allow partners to stay overnight.

This service is for a fee of course.

If you have any experience giving birth at the hospitals stated above, I would be happy to hear it.

Thank you.

If you know how I can do the virtual visits, I would appreciate it. I did try to google this but no luck. Thanks so much

I'm just wondering if anyone has any more thoughts on city or qmc? Has anyone given birth there? I need to pick but with them both being under review, neither seem that appealing?! I've been to neither maternity unit so it's impossible to know what either feel like either?

Onehotmess · 16/12/2021 20:26

Eventually you will get every kind of experience described to you. Birth is such a personal experience and each one different. Had my 1st 2 at city- baby 1 was EMCS as he was undiagnosed breach (they literally didn’t notice he was bum down until I had already been induced’) 2nd straight forward, but of extra monitoring by had VBAC, staff were lovely. Shared bathroom with next door when you’re in labour you literally couldn’t give a flying f what room you are in so i could have been on Mars. We moved and now QMC is nearer so for this one we are booked in there. I had a bleed last week anar had to go in. I know it’s trite but the are angels. Everyone was calm and friendly. I had to stay overnight in a private room as I tested positive for COvID.
