Has anyone had their c-section cancelled on the day?

I was due to have an ELCS today. I was nil by mouth from 12am and asked to arrive at 7.30am. I was shown to my bed and met all the staff that would be doing my op - I was so happy because they were all lovely and I had met the midwife months earlier and she still remembered me (she recognised me first).

About 1.30pm, having not eaten anything and sitting in the post-natal ward listening to babies all day, I was informed that my op had been cancelled due to emergencies. I have no issue with this and had mentally prepared for it. What completely floored me is that they have pushed it back by an entire 7 days, by which time I will be 40+3. I was under the impression it would be the next day. I feel terrified that baby will come before then - I have been reassured I would still get my section - so I will have to rush into hospital and be treated like an emergency having not been nil by mouth, thus incressing my risk of aspirating stomach contents, etc. I think I reacted to the news quite well (maybe too well) at the time but it hit me an hour later and I started crying in panic. I feel thoroughly depressed now.

Has this happened to anyone else? How long did you have to wait for your c-section after the original date? Did you go into natural labour prior to your op or did baby wait?

Hi everyone,

Sorry for the delay. Our daughter was born yday at 11.20am, via elective c-section, weighing 6lb 7oz and we are so in love! I meant to update sooner but it's been a bit emotional. I am recovering really well from the operation and it all went without a hitch yday. However, I have high blood pressure, which is worrying me - I have had a problem-free pregnancy and all my bloods come back clear. I'm still in hospital but only because I am taking meds for blood pressure. I am up, walking around, using the toilet, breastfeeding, etc. with no problems and our little girl is passing all her screenings. Managed to inject myself today too - surprised myself, ha. Here's hoping the meds start working and my blood pressure comes down so I feel safe to go home and be a family with my husband and dog. Thank you for all your advice and supportive comments. They all really helped me get through Tues evening and yday morning.

Yes, this happened to me. Category 3 emergency c-section due to waters breaking early and baby in oblique lie. Sat in hospital all day and nil by mouth from midnight. Husband told not to leave the ward. Category 1 and 2 c-sections happening all day. 48 hours after waters breaking came and went so baby will now need iv antibiotics after birth. Finally at 11pm I get told my c-section is now the next day so dh dashes off home via the kebab shop and I get a serving of hospital food as I have to stay in due to risk of cord prolapse. The nurse takes pity on me though and brings me 2 puddings Grin. I can eat for an hour and change out of my hospital gown and back into my own pyjamas which feels blissful. Then I am nil by mouth again. Thankfully the next morning there are no emergencies and ds is born at 9:47am.

I hope you had your c-section without a hitch today.
