Private birth London costs?

I am ttc #2 and my first birth was very traumatic and involved a major haemorrhage, plus emcs.

The hospitals near me are not great for antenatal care (including the one I gave birth in, which is rated 'inadequate') and I am considering going privately.

I'd likely need an elcs as I'd be high risk next time due to the blood loss/transfusion.

Can anyone recommend a London hospital where you gave birth privately, Costs and better still, if you had a section.

Here are lots of issues to consider here as when you go privately you have to pay for every medicine, every test, blood transfusion for both you and the baby. The best thing you could do would be to ring up the hospitals you are interested in and ask them for a rough estimate. My DiL had here babies privately in the local NHS hospital. You should also consider what provision the private hospitals have for looking after sick babies as not all do.

A quick google suggests that Guys and Thomas’ will charge about £8000 for a c-section birth

PotteringAlong · 26/10/2021 18:23

It’s another £1200 if you want scans!

Just because it's private it doesn't mean it's better. In fact nhs hospitals have better intensive care facilities and other specialists to call upon.

We are planning to go private. Including the consultant, aenethatist and hospital fees we have worked out its about £20k Inc a few nights in the hospital. We are looking at Queen Charlotte. I actually wanted St Thomas as their neonatal ward is amazing but it's just too far from us.

The ones I'd reccomend are
Queen Charlotte
Lindo
St Thomas

Avoid the portland as they don't have access to the NHS nicus etc which are better equipped.

If you want a c-section then uch is also an option but they only do c-sections

In terms of finding a consultant - even if you’re not a Bupa insured person, Google “Bupa Fee Assured” and filter for obstetricians on their consultant database - you can get the contact details for the PAs of consultants that work privately and ask them for their rates. Some consultants have tiered pricing, depending on when you start your care with them. £9-10k is not unusual.

As others have said, you won’t see much change, if any, out of £20k for entirely private care and an elective caesarean, and if you need to stay additional nights at hospital, the non-suite rooms can still run you over £1,000 per night (I think mine were £1,300 per additional night after the first night). Plus scans, bloods, and any additional testing - it can vary depending on how much additional monitoring you may need (or want).

This might be helpful, as a start: thekensingtonwing.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/Kensington-Wing-Consultant-Led-Price-List-August-2021-1.pdf

Good luck x

Fully private and consultant lead will be about 10k for the obstetrician and about 8k for the hospital, plus you have to pay for scans, anaesthetist etc. All in you won’t get much/any change from 20k. I had mine at the Kensington Wing at Chelsea & Westminster so you have all the private perks but if you need the emergency services from the NHS then they are right there on site. I’d 110% recommend it.

As others have said I'd go for an nhs hospital with a private wing.

I was going to use UCLH's Fitzrovia suite for an elective section but my daughter recently came early at 24 weeks (before I had booked with the hospital to be "private") and I ended up having to give birth at uclh as an nhs patient. We were looking at £10k consuktant, £2,250 for an unlimited scanning package, £7450 for Uclh, plus anaesthetist.

Hello!

I went private and I am scheduled to have ELCS later on this month.

Costs were as follows;

Obstetrician-9000£
Lindo Wing deposit-10400£ (that’s more than it’s required but if everything goes to plan and You don’t need any extras they refund You the difference- normally cost is 7950£). That’s also depends on which hospital You choose but that’s the prices for Lindo.
Anaesthesia is billed separately at 1450£.
Than on top of that You have scans.
I went to Fetal Medicine Center. I needed more scans than normal but I would add another 500-1000££ for scans and bloods.

Obviously costs depend on how Your pregnancy is going, if it’s complicated or if everything is fine but all in all I would say about 22k from my own invoices so far.

Also I see that You are interested in elective section.
I have told my obstetrician on the very first meeting at 8weeks pregnant that I want section. It was agreed right there on the day.

Thing I loved about going private is You don’t fight for anything and everybody is there for You at any time,You see same doctor every time and It really put me at ease.

I hope that helps You and good luck! Smile

@LonelyMomma Ours was the same for Lindo Wing for DS in 2015 but our DD and DS in 2007 was more because they're twins. For DS in 2015 the birth was amazing and I had the same staff the whole pregnancy which really helped me and like @LonelyMomma I liked not having to fight for anything. For DD and DS in 2007 the staff were amazing as it was quite a traumatic experience (said I was never having any more and then in 2015 DS came along).

Hi!
So I had both mine elcs privately, once at uclh and once at Portland last year (we chose Portland as it was the only one allowing partners to stay with you the entire time during the first lockdown, they got their own bed in the suite and all food included too ) Uclh standard package gives you three nights stay and I think they only book private elections for Tuesdays . whilst for the same price Portland package gives one night so extra nights are about £1850. Uclh doesn’t have a nursery but Portland does. The costs of extras like anaesthesia are pretty similar to what @LonelyMomma said and if you want to save on something I know you can get the obstetrician to do a delivery only package (rather than full care where they’d see you throughout the pregnancy) which makes the obstetrician fee about 4500 . That means you can do your scans and appointments privately anywhere/on nhs then just see the obstetrician for the delivery .

I started by choosing an obstetrician I liked then chose a hospital based on where they work at (had same obstetrician both times). Both experiences were amazing and stress free!

Good luck.
