C section after failed induction(s)?

Can anyone shed any light on their experiences of failed inductions? I have been induced for medical reasons and the first pessary has failed. I'm going to be examined again in the morning with a view to another pessary or a balloon.
I have had a pretty tough 24 hours with the pessary but understand as a FTM this often doesn't work first time.
If these things don't work, am I within my rights to ask about a c section? I really don't want the injection if I can help it having read a few horror stories.
Any help would be gratefully appreciated!!!

It's absolutely your right, get all the facts and ask what your chances of a section are even if the induction does put you in labour. You must be shattered after 24 hours which could increase the chance of interventions and then section.
I went on the drip but never got over 3cm, asked for a section when babies heart rate dipped for a bit, positive experience though obviously a tough recovery to start with.

Hi

I requested a c section after trying to induce my third baby at 37&2 due to gestational diabetes. I had 4 different types of pessary and they didn't work. They then tried to break my waters but I was only 1cm so it was agony and I couldn't cope with the pain of them trying to stretch my cervix. I went in on Thursday afternoon and my son was born via elcs on the following Monday at 4pm.

Hi- I’ve posted about this before but I had a similar start to my induction. I was given a pessary and sent home overnight. No change at all. I was eventually (once they had space) taken in to the induction ward for another pessary. Getting that was quite painful as the first causes a lot of dryness. That still didn’t really work. I was never offered a drip. I was begging for a c section only to be told by the doctor on rounds ‘don’t you want to have a second child?’ As if having a second would be out of the question if I had a section. At the time I couldn’t advocate for myself as I was so drained and scared and just waited until I finally got to 1cm and they ruptured my waters artificially. Things took off from there but after an extremely long failed attempt at unassisted birth I was told to prep for a section but they’d try forceps first. They managed to pull DS out with forceps and episiotomy. Had a long recovery due to fever and infection. If I had it all to do over again I’d have gone straight from failed first pessary to section. Second DS on way shortly and current consultant was more than happy for me to book in a section at 40 weeks as she understands why I don’t ever want to go down induction route ever again. You are absolutely allowed to refuse further pessary/drip and request a section.

If you want a c section, tell them. It is your right.

Isabellabasil · 23/10/2021 21:25

Yes you have the right. I had a section after 3 days of unsuccessful induction. Wish I had asked for it sooner. Good luck OP

I had 2 failed pessaries and then they suggested I went home for a couple of days and come back and try again so I asked for a c section and they agreed to it straight away no questions asked.

Thank you so much for sharing your stories with me everyone. I really do appreciate it! I will speak to the midwife about this in the morning as tomorrow will be day 3 in hospital!

Just an update - so I have been on the list for having my waters broken for 2 days as the second pessary didn't work. I have been told that a c-section isn't possible at this stage. I know the NHS is busy but I'm literally sat in the hospital waiting and taking up a bed. Cannot go home as I am giving birth out of area. Any advice?

Why is a section not possible?

Bennetgirl · 26/10/2021 12:47

I'd say if nothing is going to happen today your going home. This is my biggest fear, getting stuck pre induction. I don't want to be in for days as I have 3 other children.

Chanel05 · 26/10/2021 17:45

@Hannahb26 they are fobbing you off big time. According to NICE guidelines, you can request a section at any stage.

Advise them that you no longer to consent to the induction and consent only to a section.

I was REFUSED a section and I had an emcs in the end because I was left so long. I wish I'd had the courage to stand my ground more because they messed up my body leaving me so long.
