Heavy 'Bloody Show'

Anyone have any experience with a particularly heavy bloody show?

Had a sweep at 41 weeks, started contracting, went to triage that night due to what looked like a big clot of dark blood / mucus mix.

Doctor was happy it was just a particularly heavy bloody show, checked baby, all fine, did another vaginal exam which he said would act like another sweep - and confirmed no active bleeding from uterus. Sent home around 6am.

Contractions all that day, again with a mix of dark and light bloody mucus... called triage to ask if it was normal for bloody show to be ongoing a day later, they said yes, totally normal, especially with contractions.

Have just gone to loo to even more big dark clots than I had before I went to triage in the first place... seems to be getting worse rather than better?

Anyone had a similar experience? Not sure if I should be happy my cervix seems to be changing quickly despite my contractions not increasing in frequency, or if I need to be going back to triage.

I don't want to be PFB, but also no idea what's normal!! And this seems heavier than anything I can see online.

Phone and ask now

Definitely seek professional advice. If you are concerned, please don't be put off by worrying what others may or may not think. Your baby is due imminently and yours and your baby's health are the priority.

As someone who has just had a precipitous labour, where the first sign was a something that looked like a period rather than a typical bloody show, I would recommend calling again.

Also, if you feel any urge to push, even if you think you are in early labour - GO IN.

Btw, I was a first timer. First babies do sometimes come quickly.

You're already overdue and now this, just go in !!

To echo others, I had a quick labour (first twinge 4am, baby out by 1pm) and started experiencing bleeding about 11am, triage said to get there (were saying the fun trick of ‘have a bath and a paracetamol despite close contractions as ‘I could talk through contractions Hmm’ until I mentioned the blood) so baby could be imminent if your cervix is thinning quickly! Good luck!

Chezrone, my experience was similar.

In my case the midwives on the phone totally ignored the fact that I was saying my 'bloody show' looked like a full blown period, not like mucus tinged with blood. It wasn't until I said I felt like pushing that I was taken seriously and told to go to the hospital.

I've since been told that a lot of blood can be a sign of a rapidly dilating cervix.

I expect this info is too late to help OP, but perhaps it will

Posted too soon! Meant to say perhaps this info will help someone else, even if it comes too late for OP.

GSD20 · 21/10/2021 22:03

I’ve had this twice and both times it was rapid dilation of the cervix.
I would get checked either way though!

Just go in and be safe.
