Hi everyone!
I'm pregnant with my first baby and I need to choose a consultant asap. Could you please let me know if you had any positive or negative experiences with Guy Thorpe Beeston, Lorin Lakasing, Karl Murphy and Nick Wales? Was also thinking of Tariq Miskry but he is fully booked...I also looked at Teoh but his substitute is Chrissie Yu and I have read mixed reviews about her...

Thank you very much in advance!

I had Lorin Lakasing. She was very good, very thorough and I felt very safe with her. My recovery from c section was incredible - only in for one night and I bounced back very quickly with no side effects at all, unlike my first birth (which to be fair was an EmCS as opposed to elective). I had Lorna Phelan for my first (who I loved) but I don’t think she does private anymore.

I'm in a similar situation. I'm deciding between Chrissie Yu and Tom Setchell . I'm just over 5 weeks with our first baby and I'm already scared about the brithing process. Would love thoughts on all three consultants.

I personally think the best thing to do is to narrow down to 2 consultant and meet both. You can't decide before meeting them, you might not like how they make you feel and their personality. Personality is very important specially if you are going for a vaginal birth. You want someone you can truly trust.

Guy TB no doubt. He was fantastic.

According to a friend who had Nick Wales, he wasn't to everyone's taste. Not sure what that means, but in your shoes I'd go with Guy TB like a shot.

As you have the option to decide, book a meet and greet with a few and see who you best connect with and who is available for your due date. You’re not comparing apples to apples in terms of their personalities, how they communicate, or approaches to pregnancy and birth. The consultants you list are competent and in demand but it doesn’t mean that they’re all the right ones for you.

I’d go into it thinking about key things that are important to you to help you decide, for me some of those things were:

-how can I access the doctor out of hours if I have a concern?
-how do they communicate? (Some don’t do WhatsApp, you have to go through their PA etc)
-what kind of care do I want? Meaning a dr that’s very sympathetic and soft with their messaging or one that will be factually straightforward.

At 5 weeks you have plenty of time to decide, as even if you have an early dating scan, they probably won’t see you for a proper appointment for a few more weeks.

I also forgot to mention that if you have a preference for what hospital to give birth, that may automatically eliminate certain consultants as some of them only work out of certain facilities (ie Lorin Lakasing only works out of St Mary’s/Lindo, Nick Wales only works out of Chelsea Westminster/Kensington Wing).

Hello!
do you mind if I ask which consultant you ended up with? I’m seeing Guy Thorpe-Beeston. Do you recommend him?
