I'm going to visit a friend who had her (huge!) baby yesterday by emegency c-section after quite a long labour, PROM etc.

Anyone who had an emergency c-section - what would you have wanted at this stage? Help! I have no ideas other than homemade food...

ooh yes nice homesmade food as hospital food is yuk - anything that can be eaten with a fork only. Or cake/biscuit type thing. Also fresh fruit juice would have been delish.

Other than that a big smile and a friendly chat would have been perfect.

cake
wholesome nourishing carrot / flapjack type rather than rich chocolate

Weegle · 08/12/2007 12:10

oh and whatever you do - unless you know she is the sort of person who would find it funny don't call her new baby a bruiser, mine was "huge" but I still maintain you cannot call a baby a bruiser, and it really offended me when a few people did. He was still a "tiny" baby, helpless and loveable, far from a bruiser!

New cotton Jammies and a lovely handcream

vitomum · 08/12/2007 12:15

ear plugs, in case she's on a noisy ward and desperate for a kip.

littlefrog · 08/12/2007 12:19

is fruit juice ok? or hard for a sore tummy?
am making flapjacks.
jammies sound great, will try and pick some up on the way there.
am nervous about this, i know i only wanted family (on sufferance!) at this stage and i had an easy time of it. but her dh says she'd like me to come...

All I wanted was some huge knickers to hold everything in afterwards. Food always goes down well too. And a sympathetic ear, a long labour then emergency section can be quite traumatic so it's great to have someone who'll listen to you and hold your hand.

An insulated coffee cup and some instant hot chocolate. It was a godsend - I actually got a warm drink, some calories because I was breastfeeding and it was chocolate.

wardrobemistressakasugarfree · 08/12/2007 13:04

Oh,yes, someone to listen while I relived all the gory details and admire my beautiful boy but not to stay too long.

littlefrog · 08/12/2007 20:31

thanks for the advice!
Gorgeous baby, and my friend is perhaps the toughest woman I know 'oh, it's not painful at all, I took a couple of paracetamol yesterday (day of op) but it's been fine since then'. i am in awe...

When i had my dd my best friend brought all the usual stuff but she also brought lavender oil which she said to add to my bath and it would aid my healing.
It worked a treat

kerala · 08/12/2007 20:36

homemade or just nice food. If you are close really big knickers as small ones aggravate the scar.

or you can do as my in laws did and arrive 3 days post op, bring nothing and be surprised that I've not made them lunch. And then complain that they "have to get their own drinks" grrr

Highlander · 10/12/2007 11:09

TBH, unless she is a very close friend, leave her alone. Visitors can be exhausting. Maybe promise to cook her a casserole-type meal once a week, but just drop it off and don't stay more than 10-15 mins.

madamez · 10/12/2007 11:10

Tempting soft fruit to help with that post-birth constipation.

biglips · 10/12/2007 11:12

Agree with Madamez re the fruit. I took my own in with me even though I wasn't expecting a CS. Take some nice grapes and some of those big squashy dates.

Arnica tablets for bruising.
