Waters broke at 34 weeks

Hi all
My waters broke today at 34 weeks. Currently waiting to be checked in hospital. I'm sooo worried for my baby being born premature. Made the mistake of googling complications for premature babies .. 😭
Any positive premmie stories ? Xx

Yes 31 weeks and is a heakthy and happy 3 year old. Ive just had my 2nd and was told that babies born after 34 weeks are normally healthy with no complications. You might have a short stay in nicu and there will days when you just want your baby home but there are positive preemie stories. My advice dont look online. Easier said than done.

My brother was born at 34 weeks on 1989, a short stay in an incubator, and a bit of help feeding but he did absolutely fine! Good luck 💙

31+6! Waters broke in a flood and he was out 4 hours later with zero issues. Now a healthy rambunctious three year old.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 26/09/2021 05:45

He will be absolutely fine at 34 weeks, please don’t worry. Lots of love to you Flowers

I had my daughter at 34+0. She was tiny as there was a problem with blood flow through the placenta so it was an active decision to get her out then rather than me going into labour. She was nicu/scbu for three weeks and one day and had some ups and downs in that time. Since coming home she did brilliantly. She had paeds check ups until she was one then they signed her off. She's now a lively seven year old and seems to be fine.

A good friend on mine is a paediatric consultant. When I was worried about having a premmie she sent me a scale of how much the team panics when they hear a premmie is coming in. 34 weeks was basically a shrug. The majority of babies at that gestation do really well.

I know it's a scary time but you will be fine.

My daughter was born at 34+3, my waters went bang on 34 weeks. I was monitored for 2 days, given steroid injections then discharged as labour didn't start, the next day I had Green in the waters so was back in hospital to be induced. DD was 2.5kg I think so not too bad, needed a body temp monitor and help til she could regulate her own temperature, was tube fed initially and spent 2 weeks in special care. She didn't need any support with breathing or anything else, she stayed in special care until we established feeding. She's 13 months now and you wouldn't know she was premature at all, she's developed perfectly normally. Best of luck Flowers

My son was born at 31 weeks, emcs due to reduced movement. He was very poorly inside me, wasn't breathing on delivery and had to be resuscitated and put on a ventilator. He came off the ventilator after 2 days and pretty much went from strength to strength. We were out after a month on an early release supervised programme as he was only 3lbs10oz when he came home and we had nurses come out every day for about 10 days to check progress. He's 4 now and fine, just started reception. Good luck OP, will be thinking of you

Thank you so much everyone for taking time to write your stories.
I'm feeling better.
Still waiting for a doctor to see me & decide on a plan. I'm so nervous... this is so unexpected, my first DD was born at 40 weeks weighing 10lbs 10 so we have bought nothing in small sizes. Just hoping the baby will be born healthy

@ttdecember glad you're feeling better. There's no reason to think baby would be born with issues if nothing has been flagged up in your pregnancy. Let us know how you get on.

Lovelydovey · 26/09/2021 07:14

I’m a 35 weeker, living a very full life with no issues!

Fooshufflewickjbannanapants · 26/09/2021 07:15

My 34 weeker came home with me after 2 days she's now a trainee manager at 20 years old, my 28 weeker is a strapping 19 year old my 27 weeker was the poorliest and is a wheelchair user but happily working her way through college and my littlest 28 weeker is 8 going on 18 and sat next to me watching Aladdin. He has some issues (cerebral palsy and hydrocephalus and also a wheelchair user) but is a bright and happy boy in mainstream school. The longer they cook the better but honestly at 34 weeks you'll be fine

Jupiterscallisto · 26/09/2021 07:19

Welcome to the rollercoaster that is having a prem baby. My waters went at 22 weeks and my baby was born at 25. She's now 10 and bar some battle scars, she's healthy and testament to some amazing doctors and nurses. You will come out of the other side. Thinking of you Flowers

CPDubs · 26/09/2021 08:03

34 weeks is a pretty decent gestation for premmie babies and you’re both in the best place. I’m in a due in December group on Facebook, there are 1000 members but we’ve already got 4 babies all in NICU, the youngest born at 23w6d!

I am sure you will be fine and if there are no issues your stay will be a few days max. Good luck and keep us updated!

Cherrydown · 26/09/2021 08:13

My niece was born at 34 weeks, they went home the next day. She was small at 4lb 5oz but absolutely fine and no problems at all.

user1471457757 · 26/09/2021 08:57

My waters went at 32 weeks but I didn't go into labour until 35 weeks. Baby was fine and he's now a healthy four year old.

polkadotpixie · 26/09/2021 09:10

My friend had her baby at 34 weeks and he was absolutely fine, only about 4lbs but came home after a week or so and is a healthy 6 year old now

BillinaTheChickenQueen · 26/09/2021 09:12

I had my dts at 30 weeks and took them home shortly after their 34 week mark.
Don’t worry it’s going to be ok.

ttdecember · 26/09/2021 12:56

Thanks everyone.
They've confirmed that my waters broke however they aren't keen on having the baby before 37 weeks... so will be sent home with antibiotics & instructions to take my temperature every 4h to rule out infections 🤪😖

I'm a 34 weeker, now age 39 I stayed in hospital for 2 weeks (not SCBU just on the ward) until my Granda who was a Paediatric surgeon pointed out that there was literally nothing being done there that my DM couldn't do at home. Dd1 is a 32 weeker, now 11. 3.5 weeks in SCBU came home at 4lb in weight and is the healthiest one in the house, she is rarely ill.

crackegg · 26/09/2021 13:28

If you are at all concerned push to stay in hospital. They might not want you to, but you can demand it. Alternatively, asked to be monitored once a day. Ask for all the things you should look out for. Ask for a very clear outline of what having the baby now means versus them being without the waters. My pregnancy history isn’t related to waters breaking but in my circle of angel parents there are a few that were, though they were much, much earlier than 34 weeks. I’m not saying that to scare you. I’m saying it because if I could turn back time and get my baby out when there were complications I would. My angel baby was born at 35+3 and she was 2cm longer than my baby that lived and was born at 37 weeks.

Send you, your baby and family hugs
