Update on my homebirth decision after consultant tried to talk me out of it!

Just a quick update for all those who posted after I appealed for help! The consultant tried to talk me out of a planned home birth but in the end - after much soul searching and research (suggested by all you wonderful MN-ers) I decided to go ahead with the home birth.

I have to report my beautiful DD was born on the sofa at home a week ago, I used gas and air for the last hour but otherwise stuck to tea and toast and swearing as a pain relief measure! In the end it was so fast I never even had chance to use my shiny new birthing pool - at least it gave DH something to do what with blowing it up and filling it!

I had two midwives throughout, they were here within half an hour of my calling the hospital, set out all their kit and cleaned up afterward. They were lovely and courteous, and made me feel really at ease. It turned out that the cord was round her neck, however although they had a resus table laid out just in case, it wasn't needed as they guided it off as she was born.

This was a totally different and really positive experience compared to my last birth. I held my daughter from her first breath even before the cord was cut, which her dad and I did together. I cleaned her face myself and basically didn't let her go for hours! Last time it took me weeks to bond with my DS following a difficult hospital labour, this time we have bonded instantly.

I know home births aren't for everyone but I feel on top of the world about mine, and am so glad that I stuck to my guns about it. I am convinced that the labour was quicker and easier due to my feeling in control throughout and able to do what my body wanted to. Thanks for all the advice when I was trying to decide what to do - thank goodness for MN!

Congatulations - sounds as though you had a wonderful experience. It would be good if you could write to the consultanat and let her know how fabulous you feel about it - might sway her views

ah that sounds lovely, im still debating whether or not to have mine at home or hospital. congrats on your baby

belgo · 05/12/2007 20:09

well done dd2 was born at home, with the cord wrapped twice around her neck, and the midwives were so calm in easing it off of her neck.

LuckyStarOfBethSalem · 05/12/2007 20:28

Thats absolutely lovely.

Can I just ask - What was the reason the consultant didn't want you to have a HB? I'm having real trouble getting my MW to agree to it and I'm getting the reasons of "can you handle the pain" and "baby may be too big"

Got a growth scan next week.

bumbleweed · 05/12/2007 21:09

What a wonderful positive story Piffy and congratulations on the birth of your dd.

Am booked in for a homebirth which should be occuring any day now, and your positive story has lifted my spirits.

franke · 05/12/2007 21:20

oh luckystar what a silly silly woman your midwife is. Have you looked at the homebirth site link. There you will find retorts to her objections. It's irrelevant whether she agrees with it. It's your decision. If I were you I'd speak to the Supervisor of Midwives (should be a number in your notes) and explain that you'd like to be swapped to a midwife who is more supportive of homebirths.

lilyfire · 05/12/2007 22:23

Luckystar, I endorse what BeeWiseMen says. Def worth looking at the homebirth site link. My midwife 'made' me go for a size scan with ds2. I knew it was a waste of time because all the research says at that stage (about 36 weeks) scans are v inaccurate and shouldn't be used to work out size. I think the NICE guidelines may actually say this, worth a check. She actually told me not to tell the sonographer why I'd been sent for a scan (presumably because they'd object) and to say it was because of position. Quite why I agreed to all this, even after quoting the research to her, which she acknowledged, I'm not now sure (strange hormonal state I guess). Also I'd given birth to 11lb 3oz baby before and knew I could birth a big baby. Anyway scan said he was average size (which I was fairly sure was going to be bollocks). He was 9lb 10oz and we had a lovely homebirth. So definitely go have look on homebirth site and read the research and remember you don't have to agree to a scan in order to get a homebirth.

Thanks for the update Piffy, glad MN support helped you stick to your guns and that it all worked out so well.
Homebirths definitely rock
