Basildon hospital - your experience?

Having just read stories regarding inadequate maternity unit at Basildon hospital, I am concerned with having my 2nd dc there. I am currently 23 weeks pregnant and have read about their failings in which a women was not given the adequate blood transfusion and subsequently died as a result. Has anyone given birth there and what was your experience like?

I’m due to give birth there soon so dropping a comment so I can follow this thread if that’s ok x

I gave birth there a couple of years ago. Experience was fine. I was on the midwife led ward and thankfully no complications; everything went smoothly. Spent time in the pool and found the delivery rooms really soothing and pleasant to be in. The midwives were good although the next day I had to wait an excessively long time before being discharged (baby born around 2am, put on ward around 7am, not discharged until 8pm - but absolutely nobody came around before then except for someone who did the hearing check). Also nobody took bloody sheets, I had to change them myself.

Here's the report for their failings and what is making them inadequate. I read that the cqc scores either, outstanding, good, needs improvement or inadequate so it is rather worrying

Hi @chickenslovechickens we spoke on the other thread and as you know, I had my daughter there last September and was in when they were inspected again.

At the first inspection in June that year when rates 'inadequate' my dh and I had a real conversation about whether to swap hospitals and I said nah it'll be fine. As mentioned, I had an extremely dangerous experience during my emcs that could have been avoided. I would NEVER have another child at Basildon and I should have trusted my gut and moved hospitals.

Many, many women in my area, including friends (which if you're at Basildon, you may be local to my area beginning with B too) that I've spoken to during baby groups have had an emcs and a horrific experience there, including someone I met just today!

Please think really carefully if this is the hospital for you.

They were rated 'inadequate' in June last year and were inspected again in September, which showed they had not made any changes at all. Feel free to PM me if you'd like to know more about my experience.

Thank you. I am going to have a long think about whether or not I should request a transfer to another hospital

Hi ladies, is it too late for me to request a change in hospital? I’m now 31 weeks?

Chanel05 · 16/09/2021 19:46

@Sussexgirlie5 you can change at any point.

chickenslovechickens · 17/09/2021 00:34

I have a midwife appointment next week, I'm going to be speaking to her about options for changing hospitals

I looked into going private and from what I read it costs between 7-9k, so ridiculous

I’m not sure why this doesn’t notify me when someone responds
I had my 31 week appt today and spoke to my midwife and she assured me that they have made a lot of improvements since the cqc report. She said they have been in regular contact with the cqc if nothing the service would have been shut down if no improvements have been made.
Honestly I don’t know wat to do! The next hospital is a little while away from me. I mean so far my midwife appts have been ok. And my pregnancy is ‘low risk’ so I think I may stay and pray for the best.

Sussexgirlie5 · 17/09/2021 19:58

@chickenslovechickens going private is just out of the question, it’s so bloody expensive. How have you found ur care with them so far?

chickenslovechickens · 18/09/2021 01:04

It's been adequate so far but what prompted my post was I had a discussion with a consultant regarding either an induction or possibly a planned section and was told no, that I had to wait to go into spontaneous labour. I had quite a bad experience with first baby, 3 day induction that ended up with an episiotomy and then haemorrhage as my womb wouldn't contract ( this was in London). The hospital was amazing and stopped the bleeding and all was fine. I am worried that if this was to happen again this time at Basildon, I don't have confidence in their abilities to manage such complications. It's good to read though that they are in contact with cqc and would have been shut down if standards didn't improve
