How long did your induction take at 38 weeks

Fourleafclover93 · 10/09/2021 15:51

My consultant phoned me today to offer me an induction next week for medical reasons which I have agreed to.

She said it differs from each person but because its 2 weeks before my due date it is unlikely my cervix will be open and could be a long process.

She said it could take 2-3 days and to pack extra stuff and things to do.

I'm very impatient and hate sitting about waiting for stuff. I know I'll just need to get on with it. Hoping she is preparing me for worst case scenario.

Just wondered how long your induction took? I'll be 38+1

5 days ☹, ending in an emergency section. My only advice would be to keep moving. Walk around as much as you can. Oh and earplugs to help you sleep.

37 weeks. Induction lasted 32 hours from first pessary to birth. I was very lucky though. The gel pessaries hadn't really done much, but the labour ward was unusually empty that night. So I was bought down early for an ARM rather than trying the pessaries again the next day.

aimss4777 · 10/09/2021 23:21

First baby, 38+4, pessary, 16 hours later my waters broke!

8dpwoah · 10/09/2021 23:33

Following as I'll be having an 'early' induction this time having had one at 40 weeks last time- that took 4 days of pessaries then another 24ish hours on the drip (epidural is your friend!) Started with a completely closed cervix too.
I've packed my bag this time to allow five days before baby, just in case, as I didn't have enough clothes and snacks etc so DP had to do a top-up every time he went home. Which was no real hardship but I feel more relaxed knowing I've got enough to keep me occupied, fed and clean!

I was in induced for 2 days and then 24 hour labour and the epidural meant i couldnt feel to push, made the labour longer and ended up in theatre after failed venteuse , ready for cs if forceps failed, which thankfully they didnt. Thst was at 38 weeks after 6 weeks stay with pre eclampsia.

8dpwoah · 11/09/2021 08:28

I had a patient-controlled epidural so we turned it down when it was time to push, I could feel the pressure but not the pain.

Worth finding out whether that's doable with the epidural in your hospital OP as it was brilliant to be able to have a bit of an idea what was going on

Even though I did have forceps and episiotomy it was to turn DD slightly so possibly would have needed it anyway. Didn't go to theatre and it healed well.

I was induced at 37+4. First pessary at 4am, another at 11am. Waters broken by midwife at 9.30pm when I was 3cm. Baby born at 11.50pm. Basically only had mild period pains until they broke my waters and all hell broke loose immediately. Good luck!

JLM1008 · 11/09/2021 18:07

I went in on the Thursday at 4pm, had the 24 hour pessary which did nothing but cause discomfort and irritate my cervix. Then had 2 lots of the 6 hour gel - again did nothing but irritate my cervix and I had lots of false but painful contractions. I then had to have 24 hours off. Another round of 6 hour gel. After all this my cervix was still nowhere near effaced and the midwife could only fit a fingertip in. They still attempted a ARM which was the most painful experience of my life (and I've had 2 babies vaginally previously- one of which weighed 9lbs 1oz and was back to back!!) I screamed for them to stop and had a c section. He was born on the Monday afternoon at 4pm. If I have a 4th and they try to induce me I will tell them to jog on! 😂

BuffySummersReportingforSanity · 11/09/2021 18:10

My induction at 37 weeks was 36 hours end to end - first pessary inserted 11pm Tuesday, baby born 11am Thursday morning.

Jigsawprison · 11/09/2021 18:14

37 weeks with twins - 6 1/2 hours from induction to delivering twin 2.

angel0071987 · 11/09/2021 18:16

Both of mine induced. First at 38weeks and 1st pessary inserted 5pm and baby born 11.59pm following day.
Second induced 37weeks and took 64hrs but the labour ward was shut as over capacity so they deliberately didn't give me second pessary in timely manner so was delayed :(

8dpwoah · 11/09/2021 18:22

Yes I found that the timing of things was stretched out and so on because of things like that @angel0071987, I wasn't so bothered when it was actually waiting for a delivery room as I knew I'd be in it for the duration but sitting waiting for monitoring or an examination when you knew it was because they had already whizzed off however many women that day was a bit hard to get my head round!

SlamLikeAGuitar · 11/09/2021 18:35

3 hours Confused
DC1, 38+1.
Synth drip went in just before 9am. DC1 was born at 12 noon on the dot.
It was hellish though - I’ve always been a hard no on an epidural, no time for pharmaceutical pain relief (risk of it affecting baby if given too late!) and gas & air made me vomit like never before....so my super-quick, super-intense induction experience was a hell of a ride Blush

Bellyrumble · 11/09/2021 19:57

Following as I’m going in tomorrow at 37+5 for medical reasons and no idea what to expect.

Had a sweep yesterday at 37+3 and all it seems to have done is hurt me and give me tummy ache yesterday :( I was only 1cm too but apparently “favourable”

Will keep you posted OP but seems like it varies so much!

AdriannaP · 12/09/2021 01:40

Are you getting sweeps too? I am having two before the induction.

Fourleafclover93 · 06/10/2021 07:04

For anyone wondering got induced at 5pm, waters broke after second pesarry at 2am and I gave birth at 9.30am. Was back home with my son less than 24 hours after the start of my induction

Congratulations @Fourleafclover93 !!

I’ll update too- no pessary needed, waters broken and hormone drip at 8pm, baby born at 3:30am so 7.5 in total but only 4.5 hours active labour

The 2 day hospital stay after was a killer though Angry

Hope you’re enjoying your little one :)

DiabeticFirstBaby · 13/01/2022 16:14

I was induced and had my LG same day! I'd had a sweep 4 days before that had got things moving and had lost my plug. I was already 3cm when I went in so bypassed the pessary etc and went straight to having my waters broken and the drip!

Flutterby8 · 13/01/2022 16:32

Induced at 38+4 with the pessary.
Pessary inserted at 1.30am and first contraction at 7.30am.
From first contraction to birth, less than 2 hours.
I did have pre-eclampsia which made things speed up alot but the staff we shocked that i was 5cms dilated within a few hours.

Lifeisnteasy · 13/01/2022 16:34

2 lots of 24 hour pessaries then 24 hour cook balloon… once they popped my waters & put me on the drip, it was quite speedy and DD born in under 12 hours of labour.

LifeExperience · 13/01/2022 16:51

We must do it differently in the US. No pessaries, balloons, etc. Was 38 weeks. Started pitocin IV at 8 am, daughter born at 12 pm.

ninjafoodienovice · 13/01/2022 17:22

I went in at 9am on the day of 38 weeks, no theatres free so told to go and have a walk around and lunch. Went back at 2pm, waters broken at 2.15pm. Delivered baby at 11.30pm

whoknew23 · 13/01/2022 17:43

38 plus 2 induced in morning
38 plus 4 emcs

had a sweep at 38 weeks as well that done nothing

Hmum0fthree · 13/01/2022 18:09

38 weeks first baby 18 hours start to finish
39 weeks second baby 20 hours start to finish

Reallycantbesarsed · 13/01/2022 21:23

My daughter had perfect induction at 38 weeks,
Pessary at 2 pm .Not a lot happened
Pessary again 2 pm the following day
Contractions started that pm and we basically walked miles around the hospital and grounds
Dinner about 7
Lots of bouncing on ball
10 pm labour suite
Mobil Epidural about 1am
Calm music and daughter kind of zoned out and managed really well with only slight epidural top ups overnight.
Community midwife that had been in charge of all anti natal care came in at 9 and granddaughter born an hour later
Absolutely no dramas and the whole birth process was calm and amazing.
Cannot fault the care at RSCH …absolutely brilliant. MW from the community stayed in our room all night .
