Positive back to back labour stories

When I say positive I mean not an instrumental delivery, not mentally traumatic and didn't result in a bad outcome for baby or a severe perineal tear.

I'm 36 weeks with no.2 and my first was a 30hr labour that gave me birth trauma due to lack of good pain relief. 2hrs of pushing followed by a ventouse delivery and episiotomy with a not-straightforward recovery and a permanently weakened pelvic floor. As far as I know DD wasn't back to back at any point. Midwife thinks this one is.

My first was back to back, just over five hour long labour, didn't feel any pain in my back. I had an episiotomy and an epidural but I don't think her position would have affected that. I spent the whole labour lying on my side with a peanut ball between my legs as I read it helps keep your pelvis open even if you're lying down.

Our 3rd was back to back and my best labour.
2 days from 1st contraction. Went to hospital 9am on 2nd day, was 5cm. They broke my waters at 8cm 13:24. She was born at 13:35 with just a few pushes. I tore from v2a but she did have a 37.7cm head circumference too. I was on my back on bed for pushing stage and pain was manageable with just g&a. Weirdly the pain stopped completely once she was crowning with the 1st push, my midwife had left the room because she thought it would take much longer to get to pushing stage after waters broken.

My second was B2B, midwife couldn’t believe I wasn’t feeling more pain in my back but I used TENS from early labour and I think that masked it. DC was born at home (planned home birth) with no more pain relief than g&a, no stitches, no tear and no complications.

I actively enjoyed my labour. Had a very prolonged (straight forward) time with my first. Second was still a slow pace, but I knew I would get there, conserved my energy and it was great.

One of my DC was back to back and had a hand on his head trying to come out elbow first. It slowed down my labour a lot and I had to stand and move through the whole thing - going up and down the stairs was the best “position”.

Midwife says it probably doubled the length of my labour which for me is a good thing, because it took 1 hour 45 for baby to make an appearance instead of under an hour. That extra time got me a midwife and some gas and air, neither of which I’ve had chance to get sorted during labour before or since. No tearing, no trauma, baby fine.

My second was b2b - well, she kept turning b2b and stop/starting labour. I got through it on just gas and air, but it was more painful than my first. Minor labial tears but nothing awful. I just had to keep moving, literally paced for the whole labour or it would stop again.

DingleyDel · 10/09/2021 14:45

My 1st was b2b although they didn’t tell me during Labour (not sure the midwives knew tbh). It was fairly long and pain only in my back. No distinct contractions, Had diamorphine for the last 3 cm and then gas and air. No interventions and only a small amount of tearing. Really the worst part was the midwives telling me I wasn’t in Labour the whole time because no contractions had registered on the machine thing. I would take a b2b Labour again over being induced by drip any day!

I had a great back to back birth. I actually didn’t know she was back to back until I got to the hospital 6 cm dilated. I got an epidural and I didn’t feel a thing during labour. I pushed for 1 minute (2 pushes) and my daughter came out. It was painless and I didn’t even feel it. She was not turned or anything. I got a very small tear and back on my feet the same day.

SpamIAm · 10/09/2021 19:54

DS (second baby) was back to back right until the end, but I guess he turned during labour because he came out the right way.

yellowmelon · 10/09/2021 19:56

Dd2 is 11 days old and was back to back - a much more straightforward labour than ds1 (also back to back and forceps). Dd1 was born with no intervention needed and no tearing - very minor stitches needed. I was given 'optional paracetamol' post birth - my recovery has been chalk and cheese with last time.

*dd2 was

First baby was back to back - 4 hours natural delivery in the birth centre, gas & air only and no interventions. It is possible 🤍🤍 good luck!!

gothicsprout · 10/09/2021 20:12

2 babies here, 2nd was definitely back to back and pretty sure the 1st was too in hindsight.

With both I had all my contractions in my back which was not what I expected. Water births for both. The definite B2B labour was more stop-start but both were fairly quick (about 4 hours). Small graze and 2 stitches with my first, no problems at all with my 9lb 9 DS.

FuckingFabulous · 10/09/2021 20:31

All of my babies were positioned back to back. Baby one was the most traumatic. Two was super easy in comparison! Three was a bit bigger so a bit harder but again, absolutely nothing like the first one

BeautyAndTheBump1 · 21/09/2021 21:21

36 hour labour due to struggling with dilation, at 29 hrs in I was 2cm at 02:30am but then went into hospital at 09:20am and was 10cm, 20 minutes of pushing and he was out, with no intervention, grazes and a tiny tear that just had 1 stitch (they was deciding whether or not to stitch it) and I only got pain relief at the crowning as it all happened so fast.
