Csection hospital stay

Hi - for those that had a planned section, how long did you stay in hospital for?

I have had one but baby was in nicu and I stayed in for 3 nights but not sure if that's because of him, or because that's normal.

I'm due to have one next Thursday so wondering if it's likely I'll be out for the weekend.

Hey, I stayed in for 2 nights. She was born on the Friday morning and I was home Sunday by 5pm. My BP rose so they kept me in an extra night on Saturday.
By the sounds of it, if my BP didn't rise and I didn't need medication i really think i would have been home Saturday because she said to me 'we have to keep you in another night' in all honesty i was relieved, I was in quite a lot of pain so felt hospital was the right place for me :) if baby is feeding well and no problems with you walking etc, i really think they like to get you home.

Hope all goes well Smile

Depends on the trust. My hospital offers enhanced recovery so you’re out within 24hrs all being well.

Sprogonthetyne · 07/09/2021 10:59

I stayed 1 night, and left just before lunch the next day, will have been just under 24 hours as she was born early afternoon.

WheelieBinPrincess · 07/09/2021 11:01

My hospital has ‘enhanced recovery’ which I can’t help but think is code for ‘we are going to kick you out for your husband to look after at home as we need the bed’.

Exactly that 😂

Was sitting on my sofa 23 hours after she was born. Given what a state I was, probably wasn't the best idea.

moralcompass · 07/09/2021 11:14

I stayed 5 days but it was more because I couldn't manage the pain (other health issues as well) and I had a 2yo at home. They were happy to keep me longer and I think if I wanted to leave earlier they would've been happy with that too so don't be scared to take the lead either way x

How did you cope having a toddler at home? I have a 14month and am really anxious about him and my recovery. He's too young to understand he won't be able to use me as a climbing frame.

1 night for me, even though I had sepsis and a major haemorrhage. As soon as I was off IV antibiotics I was pretty much kicked out

idontlikealdi · 07/09/2021 11:29

24 hours with an EMCS and twins in NICU. Had to travel in to see them.

maofteens · 07/09/2021 11:49

This is 18 and 16 years ago but it was four days each. I couldn't get out of bed until the next day. Second baby was in NICU for three days then an extra day with me on the ward.

EmbarrassingMama · 07/09/2021 14:47

DS was born at 9:30am (EMCS) and we were out just after lunch the next day.

Dogsandbabies · 07/09/2021 15:34

One night for me. Had the baby in early August, around 11 and was out by 2pm the next day.

SingingWaffleDoggy · 07/09/2021 15:45

Baby delivered at 9am, catheter out at 4pm, walked out to toilet at 5pm, was talking discharge at breakfast the next morning and by the time I had got my drugs etc it was lunchtime. So about 27 hours.
I was also a victim of the “enhanced recovery” pathway! I’m not sure there’s anything enhanced about it. You just get kicked out sooner! Saying that, I’ve got a toddler and a good DH so managed well. The morning after discharge was the worst and it improved from there. Dihydrocodeine is your friend Grin

@Amichelle84 mine was older at 24 months so I used to ask him to get on the sofa to give me a cuddle etc.. it will
Be more difficult with a 14 month old. Will your partner get 6 weeks paternity leave? If so then that will definitely help.

He will get 4 weeks which will hopefully be enough.

24 hours in the midst of lockdown last summer. Was probably too soon but for the best as the post natal ward was horrendously busy and got zero sleep or support. GL

Millionnewnames · 08/09/2021 09:26

Home 18 hours after emergency section here.
But that’s because the hospital I went to is a shit hole and the midwives were utter c and they’d almost killed us both.
After a beautiful birth with zero damage prior to this I was a bit unprepared and in shock.
I don’t recommend it. The operation to make my tummy look normal again is about 10k. Have a couple days laying down if you can .

Amz6219 · 09/09/2021 16:36

I had EMCS Saturday morning and went home Monday morning

Get the feeling it would have been earlier but we were both on antibiotics and he needed some jaundice treatment

Chelyanne · 09/09/2021 17:36

My 1st was elcs at 38wk with breech twins, stayed 1 night (less than 36hours in hospital).
2nd wax booked for 39wk with big singleton, went in to labour a day earlier though. Had been in labour over 20hours before they got me in to surgery and my previous scar had started to rupture, lost a lot of blood and was very unwell. 1st time they took catheter out I couldn't toilet so that had to go back in. Spent 3 nights in hospital, 2nd time they took catheter out I could toilet so they discharged me. Baby had no issues, was all me keeping us there. Was awful as had little help and was quite weak those 1st few days, was so glad to get home.

Chelyanne · 09/09/2021 17:37

Most recent was our 6th baby

LunaTheCat · 09/09/2021 17:44

“ Enhanced Recovery” 😂😂

I cannot help think that if blokes had major abdominal surgery with a wounds he size of a c/section , they would not kick them out in less than 24 hrs and give them a tiny human being to feed and look after.

WheelieBinPrincess · 09/09/2021 17:52

@LunaTheCat no, you’re absolutely right. Wouldn’t discharge them with just bloody paracetamol either!!

JLM1008 · 11/09/2021 18:24

I had my son at 4pm on the Monday and we were home by 11pm on the Tuesday. I could walk about and pick my son up. The pain was controlled with paracetamol and ibuprofen. I had been to the toilet. I wanted to get home - the ward was so warm and I missed my husband and older children. Because of COVID my husband had only visited us for 1 hour since he'd been born.

Gem176 · 12/09/2021 19:54

Had my section at 11am on 31/08 and was out the next day. One night on a postnatal ward was more than enough. Too hot, too bright and far too noisy. Baby had all her checks done. It was my second section so I knew what I was doing with the clexane injections and after peeing a "decent" amount to prove my bladder was working fine I was allowed home. Recovered so much easier this time as I wasn't exhausted from attempting to rest in hospital for 3 days. Nothing beats your own bed!!
