bit embarrasing this, and i'm sure there must have been threads about this before, but am terrified of pooing whilst in labour!! think i did one last time (can't be sure, but after one tremendous push, the mw said "oops" and shoved some paper towel down there!!)

wondered if i could get an enema prescribed and self administer!! am planning on home birth.
Anyone heard of that being done?

I mentioned this to the midwives where I'm due to give birth and they looked shocked and said that women don't do poos when they're giving birth. I hadn't been worried about it at all but now I've started to feel uncomfortable because everyone tells me how common it is; they didn't exactly make me feel that it was a normal thing for them to see.

Camillathechicken · 04/12/2007 14:25

really bessie?!

i am surprised

one of the signs of the baby;s head coming down can be a bit of poo.. and certainly as a woman pushes correctly, she can poo a bit.. so it is perfectly normal! am a bit they said that it does not happen...

some women don't.. that is certainly true.. but a lot do

it is a shame they made you feel it was somehow abnormal!

Bessie123 · 04/12/2007 14:28

Thanks, Lulu. I might bring it up again at my next ante-natal appointment and try to make them admit it's normal. I will feel less nervous about it then, I think.

FAWKEOFFwiththetinsel · 04/12/2007 14:29

i deffo did a poo with DS

Camillathechicken · 04/12/2007 14:31

i wouldn;t particularly bother trying to make the MWs admit it is normal..... maybe they are in denial as long as you take it on board as a normal ,physiological result of being in labour, then you will be cool !

Bessie123 · 04/12/2007 14:34

hmm, maybe...

pooka · 04/12/2007 14:45

I expect the midwives said that with a view to suggesting that even if you did poo, noone would tell you!

sweetkitty · 04/12/2007 14:52

I did a poo with DD2 (homebirth) DP and MW cleaned it up, its hard not to poo as it's exactly those muscles you use to push the baby out, DP said there was that much other fluid and blood coming out the poo was lost in the midst of it all.

TBH I couldn't care less if I pooed in labour, I was having a baby therefore I am superwoman and great

Bessie123 · 04/12/2007 14:53

Ah, Pooka, you could be right.

I did imagine that I wouldn't be particularly bothered, but would just like the reassurance from the mw that it is normal anyway.

glaskham · 04/12/2007 15:04

first time round i was petrified of pooing on the bed!!- second time round it didn't even cross my mind- my midwives were so calm and relaxed i will never know if i did poo!!- home births are sooooo much more relaxing and i'm sure you'll not be bothered at the time!!

I was just wondering- birthing pool wise, what happens if I poop?Do they like scoop it away? What if it's the runs? I'm terrified at the prospect. This is the only thing I'm worried about when it comes to the birthing pool

bigmyrrhstrikesagain · 18/12/2007 13:49

Don't know about 1st birth at hospital but i know i pooed for my 2nd homebirth. I really regretted making omelettes and meringues that day!

The mw are used to it and clean up efficiently and you are going to be too busy pushing out baby to worry, if you do poo. Good luck.
